Young Drivers Car Insurance

Recommended Posts

I passed my driving test last July. My mum's car insurance is coming up for renewal in the next couple of the weeks so she's letting me have a search for quotes with me on the policy  I haven't driven since I passed my test, but I really enjoyed learning and was a fairly confident driver, so I hope I can get it back quickly! I might phone up my instructor and ask for a few extra lessons...

Anyway, the cheapest I have found so far is £501 (co-op). This is with the box installed on the car, which my mum would be happy with as she never drives after 11pm anyway. It's only £70 more than what her current insurer wants for next year, so it's pretty good, but I thought I might as well check if any omleteers know of any amazing deals... :D

It's a nissan micra, 2003, with my mum and my dad insured as well, who both have 5+ years no claims.

Thanks!

(P.S. if anyone has the box installed, an honest opinion/description of how it works would be amazing! :) )

I got this policy a few months ago when my son was learning to drive. He passed his test last week  . Our quote was about £457 but has gone up by £16 now he's passed (which I thought very reasonable). We've had a discount of £26 already though 8) .

We've found it's made us much more conscious of the way we drive. OH and I were pretty careful drivers beforehand so it's not been difficult to keep within the parameters they set although it's quite hard to get an "excellent" score for braking/accelerating and cornering, mainly, I think, because we live in a city (speedbumps/roadworks/traffic etc). Driving after 11pm really lowers your total score though (more than I think it should) but we don't drive at night much at all so it's not been a problem.

I was speaking to a guy at the Co-op about this and he said that as long as you have a "Good" score, that shows you're driving perfectly well. "Excellent" is above average.

Here's my original thread about it.

Tbh if the co-op insurance quote only increased your mum's renewal by just £70 to have yourself included on her policy, I think that's pretty amazing considering you are only 18. Although I don't have any experience with "the box in car" for that price I'd say jump at it, but as you haven't driven since passing your car test last July I would strongly recommend that you do have a few lessons with your instructor as you mention, just for your own piece of mind/reassurance. Good luck, Jx.

That is a great price! 8)

I pay nearly £2000 for my car with my own policy, hoping it'll go down next year!

I did look at Co-Op but I do so much driving during the 'wrong' hours.

Work in theatres so lots of late night driving, do lambing from 9pm-6am so more silly hours and then work is 2.5 hours round trip nearly all motorway and that can be funny hours too!:lol:

That is a great price, the only snag that I can see is that you will presumably not be earning your own no claims, which will help in the future if you get your own car.

We have an Admiral multicar policy, because we have 3 cars and my ED also 18, who passed last September, is insured on one of them a 2 litre diesel. We are paying about £800 more per year to insure her than we would if it was just my husband and myself, this is still alot cheaper than it would be for her to have her own car and insure herself, she is also earning no claims on the car she is insured on because she is the policy holder.

She does think that we are mean though because we don't let her take the car out on her own much, but she does drive once a week, so I am glad that there are other young drivers out there who don't automatically get let loose with a car as soon as they pass their test. Too many of her friends have had cars given to them and they drive without a care in the world, that said one of her friends had a near miss yesterday that really shaken her up, so I think that ED is now realising why we have a few ground rules. Having your own first car should be earned.
