Ariella26
My new arrived on Monday and my hubby and I put it together this morning, which was much simpler than I thought it might be. It looks fab and I'm really pleased with it. There are a couple of holes in the roof of the cube, which are filled with some kind of plastic I think. Can anyone tell me if I am supposed to leave it in there or should I pull it out? Now it's all starting to feel very real that we're really going to have chickens! I keep going and looking at the cube and imagining the hens running about.

Ariella26
Ok, thank you. I just didn't want the hens pecking at it when they're in there. Perhaps I should just push it in slightly as it's sticking out the holes a bit. I'm enjoying the cube so much already. I can't wait until we finish buying everything and can get the chickens in the next few weeks. I've got a lovely pet area of the garden now, with the cube and run, the runs for the and and the tortoise enclosure. (There doesn't seem to be a icon for tortoises ) I can't wait to sit out with my coffee in the mornings and watch them all.

Ariella26
Hi Molly, I'd like a mix of hybrids and pure breeds to get a variety of coloured eggs. I think we'll be going for a white leghorn and a cream legbar, a welsummer and then either an araucana or columbine for some blue eggs and perhaps another hybrid or two. I'm unsure whether to go for 5 or 6 chickens. At the moment I have a 4m run but will be extending this to 5m over the next month or so. They won't get to free range much as we have quite a lot of foxes in the area. I want to ensure they're comfortable without feeling crowded. Should I stick to the 5 hens, knowing they'll have their recommended 1 square metre of run each or would an extra chicken be okay? I want to buy them all together to avoid having to make new introductions in a couple of months time. Any advice would be so appreciated from anyone.
