Does anyone have any tips on how to get the hens to eat the layers pellets which have been mixed with Flubenvet?

We mixed a batch up as per the instructions adding a little bit of oil to make the Flubenvet stick. The hens ate it on day one but don't seem to like it any more and are just leaving it in the the feed container.

I find it much easier to but the pellets with the Flube already milled in to them.

Never had any trouble with my hens eating them at all - maybe its something in the taste of it that they are not keen on...most meds are bitter tasting,& it tit is coating the pellet that may be the trouble.

I dont feed the ready mixed pellets firstly because its costly and secondly because when you most want them to eat the pellets you are changing their diet (unless you already feed Marriages)

 

Personally I'd go down the tough love route, they certainly wont starve themselves and will end up eating your home mixed pellets

my lot get the same pellets as normal but I use cod liver oil to bind the Flubenvet they never seem to notice as Redwing says tough love also if you use the plastic feeders only put enough feed for that day in ie 100grams per bird it worked with my first 3 when they got a bit picky now there's more becks they don't hang around it's heads down bums up and scoff as much as you can

I hope the worming works. TBH I don't know if they have worms its just that one of the two stopped laying months ago and I don't know why. They are only just a year old. I've checked for mites and found nothing. I've given them vermx a month or so ago. And to add insult to injury the other hen didn't lay either today so no eggs at all!

Mine get the ready mixed pellets and nowt else; they eat it all.

 

It's worth worming quarterly with Flubenvet to make sure that they aren't compromised by a gut full of worms.

We're on worming week. They get usual layers pellets with flubenvet and cod liver oil. This means they are not allowed out onto grass twice a day (mucho whinging) and are locked down into the omlet run earlier than usual to ensure they fill their crops with treated pellets. They are allowed into their usual WIR incorporating compost bins during the working day. NO TREATS WHATSOEVER!!! They hate it!

 

If I ever own a pub it will be called "The Whinging Chicken"!! Neighbours have commented that they seem gripier than usual!!

 

However, they do go to bed on a full crop of pellets and I've made sure the carpet is well over the bins so forage is limited.

 

Hens are not stupid - if that's all you offer they will eat the treated pellets - be strong!

 

Roll on Sunday when they will love me again!

The feed them nothing else approach does seem to be working although I have to admit I shut them in the run and then let them out after and hour because I felt sorry for them! Poor chooks - not only are they on horrible food we've had so much rain today their patch is beginning to look like a pond.
