What colour is this Maran please

Recommended Posts

Yes it is a Cuckoo Marans and the type know as Dark Cuckoo in UK but called Silver Cuckoo in the French Marans types.

The Poultry Club standard in the Uk recognises White, Black, Silver Cuckoo, Dark Cuckoo and Golden Cuckoo, but pretty well all of these varieties apart from the Dark Cuckoo have disappeared over the years. The Marans Club of Great Britain gives all the details and has lots of other interesting information and links

I've just hatched some cuckoo ones but am unable to tell whether they're hims or hers. They were quite hard to candle due to the dark brown.

Salisbury auctions has lots of marans eggs in the sale on Saturday. Some really dark ones went for £40 odd for 6 last time.

Thank you everyone! The Maran Club link was great and I've just ordered half a dozen Cuckoo eggs from one of their suppliers. Also, 3 Gold Laced Orps and 3 Gold Laced Wyandottes coming from a local supplier so Nigella is going to be a busy girl! This is our first time to try a hatch so am quite excited. Moving broody miss out of the nesting box tonight into a maternity wing so fingers crossed she won't walk away!

Thanks again
