Pig/Hog roaster

Recommended Posts

Dear all knowing omleteers,

Does anyone have any experience of gas hog roasters? I am planning a family birthday party and think this will be a lot easier than BBQ for numbers (cooks a whole pig in 5-6 hours). The cost of hiring seems to be around £200 a day however(DIY - equipment only), they add £150-180 for the pig (will do about 100 people). Our local butcher would do us a whole 50kg pig for about £100, so that saves a bit.

The question is do I just pay the hirer cost and have done with it (they deliver & take away), buy one 2nd hand off Ebay, either to use at other occaisions or to sell again afterwards.

Views, suggestions, & ideas much appreciated - the cost of renting seems a waste, bit I want thepig roast!

I would buy one on ebay then hire it out for £100 a time, undercutting the others....you should still make some money on it :D

That's my thinking - OH more in the 'where would we store it?' school of thought.

We were going to do this for my daughter's wedding party with a couple of the guests being responsible for the cooking, THEN we heard about a friend giving everyone food poisoning .... so we binned the idea. I think you really need someone who has done it before to be responsible for the cooking, at least the first time around.

On the cooking side we do know what we are doing (5 years of catering qualifications and working in the industry helps!) - infact last year we were at a wedding where we took responsibility for cooking both a pig and lamb in this way (they hired 2 roasters) and it was so effective and simple, so I have no issue with my ability to use it - I just resent paying a £200 a day hire cost!

Yes but how much do they cost to buy, isn't that relevant? The one DH was lusting after recently was over £2000.

We went to a 70th birthday and they got hog roasters in who did the lot, I think they said it was less than 500 all in, worth it if you can then relax and let someone else do it and clear up!
