sandyhas3chucks
Hi, Firstly we are seeing a vet quite a few times actually. We have had a brachyaspira diagnosis, though do not think the 2 things are related???? This hen got up one morning 3 weeks ago with huge sour crop. half emptied and treated, and fully recovered crop emptying overnight etc for about 10 days.. Then one morning crop not empty. Not full either a doughy with gritty or grainy fel to it slightly larger than a golf ball in size. We have tried various thing metaclopromide injection, followed by tablets. WE have gone from nothing much coming through to some nasty black treacly type and watery (and others and have had the odd semi "normal" . Off course the brachy is being treated but I am syringing maybe 15mls of their medicated water (not drinking much which I know does not help) We are now thinking it is a physical blockage and am using 1ml liquid parafin 2 x daily. She wont eat maggots and have dropped some in , 10 x 2 one day, a lot in one go yesterday. She stars the day a little down then sits in bed for a while. then by 10 most days is up about acting like there is nothing wrong. eating????? some seen her stuff a large worm.? obviously not enough ,,,, and why oh why will they not eat maggots just when you want them too.... It loosens up nicely,. and managing to keep from getting proper sour.. The thing is crop flushing may be what we will try next but she is a right stressy stroppy monkey, and the vet is not sure how that will go... the same goes for a crop op whilst awake??????????? Has anyone had experience of similar and how long should I keep trying... IF she was looking ill (as she did before) I would put her to sleep (last time decided at night it was not fair and out she erupted in the morning right as ninepence.. I today added Critical Care to her liquid.. It's a bit of a puzzle and not sure what to do for the best. Hoping for Omlet power for ideas... Plum
Don't know Sandy but you'll know yourself when to call it a day. Sounds like she might be bouncing out of it again. Fingers crossed. x
sandyhas3chucks
Am assuming no one else has had similar, and no advice to give.. I have her booked in for a crop flush maybe on Monday, IF she is in the same situation as she is now, I am hoping it will clear. It is really really hard as she is so well and sprightly in between her quiet sad moments, See enough ill chooks... this is odd.. I think I have to try the flush and if it blocks again it will be a clear indication that there is something else going on maybe tumours and I will PTS and have PM done.. Talk about one day at a time... Shes ad a better day today only moments not looking right...???????????????????????????
Plum
I think Dogmother is experienced in flushing crops and the regime it may be worth pming her for advice she's really helpful
sandyhas3chucks
The vet can do it. I don't like emptying a sour crop incase I kill them. We are concerned because she is so stressy and worrying and she is strong still. Though strong is good is also cause for concern. I wonder if her eyes are covered she would be calmer? Egghead68
Maybe. Don't know if hypnotizing would work? http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_hypnotism
sandyhas3chucks
sadly not... became clear PTS before she was sad looking ALL day.. PM showed tumour in one tube post gizzard hence not emptying fully. peacefully helped on her way. On the positive side her positve Brachyspira test and flock treatment DID zap it in 2 others that had just started showing symptoms. Only 3 walkers now, and last one was only layer, very vocal, very active(until few days ago.) very helpful in the garden AND head chook... Very quiet today... Other 4 remaining pretty old girls. Plum
So sorry, nothing would have helped then and you did the right thing for her. Hope it's just a blip with Head Chook, give her a good talking to. Don't be sad your other girls are old. Be happy you have done them proud helping them get old but I know what you mean though. As you know one of mine is living on a knife's edge and I'm thankful each day she keeps going fine. Big hugs for you Sandy x
sandyhas3chucks
thanks, the girl that went was head chook but likely the one you are talking about is now. hers are definately egg related issues.... not sure now weather that is good or bad. but on known territory for me on that one. there are no iffs or buts or maybe's

Egluntyne
You've definitely done the right thing, as she had been in difficulty for three weeks.
sandyhas3chucks
Absoloutly...... though made a total recover after first week.. sends you a false trail really thinkng a physical blockage. Wish they were so adept at hiding it middle if the week the sun was shining and she was chatting and gardening with me gobbling worms. Don't know how having seen her intestines!!!!!!! Was sort of hoping someone could say well if not cleared in x days then it wont . Glad I didn't wait till the Monday appointment I think I would be looking at a horridly poorly bird by today.
