Isabel
Hi Our dog has attacked one of the hens. She has been bleeding quite badly from her comb. The bleeding has slowed or stopped now - hard to tell as I had sprayed with Nettex anti peck spray (all I have) but when she shook her head blood sprayed all over door of house. It looks like one end has been ripped up. Haven't separated her from the other hen as have a hen and chicks in separate accommodation. Have them both locked up for the night now. Seems bright - was eating corn - for now anyway. What, if anything, can I do please? Apart from get rid of the dog!!!! Thanks Isabel
sandyhas3chucks
well are you asking for help with chook or advice re dog? The chook will be fine overnight with her friends but if I were you I would get them up early as they might go for her comb when they see it if there is blood there still. Then I would wash her comb IF you can IF there is lots of blood there, and try not to make it bleed more. Then you need to spray it with purple spray to disguise and treat the wound . Then you need to keep her safe if the others are going to peck it. (they may not) Sorry but this is assumng too that she lives the nigh as shock can kill them, but she is safe in the dark and best chanve now for tonight, THen you need to check her very carefully ALL over for any other wounds incase you missed them today. Good luck.
Isabel
Chook, thanks Sandy!! Great advice which I'll take on board. Can grab purple spray first thing. She's settled now with no further bleeding. I'll give her face a wash in the morning to get her cleaned up. Am worried about shock but there's nothing I can do about at. Dog is in mucho trouble. Thanks again
sandyhas3chucks
no there is not a lot you can do at any time for the shock but to keep them calm and maybe dark and someplace quiet, the coop the best place right now. What sort of dog are you rehoming was it being bad bad or did it think it was playing>? my dog ignores the girls at worst she is scared of them! Isabel
Border Terrier, just a year old. Having real problems with him. He has pinned them down once or twice but never injured them before. He's not usually allowed loose in the garden but I let him out today as I didn't have time to take him out on lead. Seven hours later and we've only just caught him. Lesson learned.
