My light sussex bantam chicken of fate, Houdini is broody again - but weirdly, day 2 into being broody, she laid an egg. I'm not nervous about this or anything, but I'm interested to know how common this as I've not seen it before.

 

Anyone else seen similar?

Yes, my two silkie girls have done this the last few times they've been broody

My Pepperpot continued laying for a few days but then stopped.

It took her about 4 weeks to stop being broody and about 6 weeks to start laying again.

Mine's on the bars in the broody sin bin.

 

I get velociraptor noises every time I say hello now...

She's much more broody this year than last!

this is my second year of having chooks and have the pleasure of one of my light sussex going broody,she fluffs all up and makes a horrible squawk and has plucked her belly bare, when I eventually get her out the nestbox after pecking my arms and hands a few times,I have put her in the dog crate with some food and water and hoping she will stop soon.Have been putting her back in the cube at night and putting her back in crate in the morning but its not working so leaving her in the crate and locking her in the shed tonight so she safe from anything around.Is this the right thing to do and can I do anything else to maybe out of being broody ?

Well my pekins have been a hive of broodiness!!! Milly was indeed laying and broody!!! In the end I got some eggs for her to sit on(3 bantam aruacana) and added one from each of my 3 girls just to see what would happen!?! She was as happy as a lark!! But I accidentally broke one of the blue eggs day3 when lifting her out...but low and behold she had laid one more, so I still had 6!!! The arucana eggs where a disaster as one didn't hatch and the one that did died day 3, but my 4 littles are doing really well!( 2 of which are Milly's!!)

 

Molly one of my other girls has been broody twice so far this year!!!!!!(She was also laying to begin with) Managed to brake the broodiness 1st time with persistance. But the 2nd time has been a nightmare!!!!! Tired all the tactics from the 1st time, but she wasn't having any of it!!! So she was in the wire cat carrrier for 3 days I let her out she was bashing herself on the closed pop hole to the cube!!!! I'm such a soft touch ....I went and got some pekin hatching eggs for her too!!!! Day 12 for those.

 

What am I going to do next year???????? Thankfully my millifleur hasn't shown any signs of broodiness and lays us an egg every other day.....long may that last! As for Monty my cockerel he just can't figure out where his girls have gone!!

She's warming herself up overnight! I have a WIR, so in there, I bought a dog travel cage. Unless I'm in the garden with all of the hens, little Houdini stays in there. It's on bricks so that air circulates beneath her. In there is a spare grub full of food, and a tray of water. Overnight, unless it drops to <3 degrees, she remains in it but I put a thin blanket over the the cage in case any foxes pop by overnight and start having ideas.

 

Mine takes at least 3 days and nights, but sometimes it can go on for 5 or so days if she's heavily broody. The earlier you catch the broodiness, the easier it is to sort.

 

On a separate note, I like the sound of bantam Araucanas - where can I buy some?
