clucker1
Does anyone have public liability insurance for chickens? Our householder insurer won't cover them as they are livestock. We have 6 chickens, any recommendations anyone? I really want cover just incase they escape onto the road by us causing an accident. They are well fenced in, I am probably being OTT, but just want to cover myself. Thinking about it, they might cover the cube too.
House MD 221B
I should imagine you would only require this if you planned on selling the meat or eggs for profit in case you inadvertently poisoned someone, but just for keeping them I don't know what damage they could possibly do, unless your neighbour grows prize winning expensive vegetables and they got in. But I personally wouldn't see the need in this, but there may be things I haven't considered.
clucker1
I was thinking along the lines, if they escaped and caused a road traffic accident and I was deemed negligent for not keeping them in. We have a 5 bar gate which is shut, but if someone left it open??? They are well fenced in, but there is one section if they use their brains like last week, our clever chicken worked out if she jumped onto the pile of logs (just put there to be chopped up) onto the wood store, then through the 6 foot layer of trees and then (but she didn't get this far as we were onto her!! through the holey fence. I don't think "escape " was on her thoughts, more like let's have an afternoon adventure! Plus she doesn't like going far from her friends who aren't as agile as her to do this feat of acrobatics! Olly
I doubt if the chicken (or its owner) would be held at fault if there was an accident - it's generally horses, cattle etc where the owners can be sued. After all, the chicken would just be doing what it had to do ... crossing the road, but who knows why?
Chucky Mama
I tend to agree with Olly. I believe (happy to be proved wrong) that cats can't be held responsible for causing an accident as they are 'free spirits' (or something like) that so I doubt you could be sued over a chicken
IanT
Why not get a self closing mechanism for the gate so it can't be left open?
clucker1
Thanks Ian, that sounds a great idea. At present, the gate is on the list of things to do! It needs a new pillar to be built, the quote we had was nearly £1000, plus it goes down a slope. Ideally.....hahaha!!! I would like an electric gate, but not on the agenda at the moment Thank you for the thought anyway. So far we have had the chickens for 2 yrs and there is a little half gate which we all use and so far "Ooops, word censored!"ody has left it open,
Space Chick
After all, the chicken would just be doing what it had to do ... crossing the road, but who knows why? Genius Olly, pure genius Gave me just the giggle I needed on a Sunday morning. Back to the problem Clucker1, you don't have public liability for cats or dogs, so in the highly unlikely event your chickens did cause an Accident it would be no different than if a cat or dog run out surely
