The Dogmother

Poem by Walt Whitman

Recommended Posts

I really like this (from another forum)....

Placid and self-contained.

I think I could turn and live with animals,

they are so placid and self contained.

I stand and look at them long and long.

They do not sweat and whine about their condition.

They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins,

They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God,

Not one is dissatisfied

not one is demented with the mania of owning things,

Not one kneels to another,

nor to his kind that lived thousands of years ago,

Not one is respectable or unhappy over the whole earth.

"not one is demented with the mania of owning things, " they obviously haven't seen my Ruby with her new toy

Love your comment about Ruby, like the poem but it is a bit whimsical isn't it

Nature is very cruel and there are plenty of birds and animals that collect and protect and are full of greed, but I had a lovely afternoon yesterday, just the girls and the dog pottering about the garden, with no-one saying wheres this and can I have that and have you seen this and can you drop me off here and.......I could go on

Our Duncan is having a good whine now as I have finished my cup of tea, he has checked, and now wants his walk.

Mmm. who trains who
