Mushrooms

Recommended Posts

Anyone passing our house today could have thought that some DIY was going on (anyone who has been to my house would know this is a hilarious concept :P )

However, the sound of drilling and hammering was OH putting mushroom plugs into logs

We have shiitake, oyster and lions mane :D

Hopefully come spring we will be eating home grown mushrooms

They now need to be covered in black plastic and left in the shed for 6-9 months

Wow, that sounds exciting! It's a long time to wait though! I've always fancied having a go, and picking wild mushrooms to eat...but not sure that's such a good idea as I've got no experience!!

I'm sure making mushroom logs sounds harder than putting up shelves!

They reckon the logs will produce for up to 5 years, and will crop 3-4 times a year :D

I don't know how it will do, but worth a go.

The mushroom plugs cost £20, the logs were free, so worst case scenario we are £20 and a few hours work down. However, at around £2 for 100g of shiitake mushrooms, if it does work it'll be a bargain

We love mushrooms here and have tried a couple of logs with no success, although we did buy them pre-done and had one bought for us. I think we struggle to find the correct conditions for the logs long term in our small garden and we have a lot of woodlice here despite the chickens and they love mushrooms. We have done a few kits successfully and we have some Suttons mushroom spawn in an old dolly tub at the moment, it seemed to start doing the right things and then we got the cold wet weather so it has stopped, but hopefully it will get going again soon.

Good luck growing anything yourself is exciting but challenging.

We have a chicken shed on wheels & when we move it to a new location, underneath, there are loads of mushrooms. They are delicious! We get a lot on the fields in certain places. Most we eat, but there are the odd few which are suspicious & not to be eaten!

We had a mushroom kit when we were little. A mouse took up residence in the soil in the box! We did get some huge mushrooms though.

Good luck with yours Space chick!

The best mushrooms that we have ever had were when we bought some spent mushroom compost to put on our potato patch in the summer of 1998, I remember this because I was pregnant with YD and a bit reluctant to eat them. It was damp weather and we got enormous mushrooms coming up all over the potato patch, they were yummy, but I was a bit worried about eating them at first.
