Daisy went very unwell yesterday morning and her crop was full and her tail down I picked her and she was sick so took her to the vets. He swabbed her and she has an infection in her crop so she is on antibotics, her crop was nearly empty this morning as she has been in the house in a box last night my other half said maybe we should put her out for abit as she was perching but I took her out and Molly started pecking her:( and she was just standing there looking very miserable so I bought her straight back in and she is lying down in the box.

Would it be best to keep her in today so she can rest I'm just worried about the pecking and her missing the others.

I just feel bad that she's in a box but want to do the best for her any advice would be greatly appreciated as I lost my dad recently and am all over the place and can't think straight.

If the weather is cold and damp then she will be better off inside for a few days also other hens will

bully sick hens.

I'm lucky as i have a fold up run that fits in our conservatory for sick hens but a large box with mesh over the top

so she can get some daylight is still as good.

If her crop is empty this morning maybe try a little pellets in warm water this afternoon, keep her box and water,

food bowls very clean to help stop reinfection. Watch her eating and drinking to see if you may need to syringe feed.

So sorry to hear about your problem with your chook (and your Dad - we were told yesterday the lump on my Dads kidney is cancer so feeling for you and sending good wishes).

 

I would leave her in until the antibiotics have started to work and she is feeling better and able to run away/defend herself. I always seperate my sick ones and I think they appreciate it. You soon know when they are better as they become quite vocal and wont stay in the box.

 

The antibiotics wont take long to start working.

Thankyou both, I have given her abit of natural yoghurt which she seemed to enjoy shes not really interested in pellets will pick one up and then drop it. I do have a large indoor rabbit cage which I think I shall put her in.

I'm sorry to hear that. Try getting her to drink, or syringing her with some diluted Life-Guard tonic; the nutrients in it will help her recover and it contains probiotics which will be essential if she's on antibiotics.

Just check with the vet before using yoghurt and probiotics as they can counteract some antibiotics.

i dont think they counteract..

its just that antibiotics kill bacteria...

this is quite controversial opinion when among professionals and with people.

it certainly does no harm, and has potential for a lot of good...

one vet suggested mega doses of probiotic at the same time.

others say 2 hours before and 2 hours after giving antibiotic.

Yea, i have had two vets tell me two different things, I've taken to only giving probiotics and yogurt

after the antibiotics have finished just in case.

Well abit of good news daisy has picked up quite abit I put some pellets in the mixer and ground them and added some water and she wolfed the down. Her poos have started to get firmer which is good, but still keeping her in, I have put her in a very large rabbit cage and sheis looking around, also she is very good at having her tablets so fingers crossed.

Daisy had perked up alot this morning and was clucking away so took her in the garden for abit and she was her old self so we have put her out in the run as its so warm today, at first she decided to have a fight with the boss mocha so I had to break it up but everything has calmed down now and daisy is enjoying being back with girls but I am going to keep an eye on her just incase but she seems to be fine think she got quite bored in the house
