Flossie G
Hi, I have a problem with jackdaws stealing food from my hens' Grub. The adults are in the process of teaching their offspring how to do it and I also notice that other wild birds are helping themselves as well. I'm not just bothered about the food disappearing, it's the pests and diseases that wild birds might pass on to my birds that really worries me. I am presuming that the only thing I can do is to remove the Grub and to give my hens their daily ration in the mornings only. This will be a pain because I have a very bossy bird who will probably take command at the appointed feeding time and I have broody girl who might not get a morning feed at all. If anyone else has had a problem with this, did you manage to solve it and how did you do it?! Thanks.
Gloss-Hen
Hi we sometimes have jackdaws in our garden and the jackdaws steal food if the chickens are'nt watching. There is a type of feeder that the chickens stand on and some food comes out but it is very expensive from some places. hope someone with more expeirience can help skye
Flossie G
Hi, I might just have to live with it, apparently, though someone on another site has had some success stringing CDs across the front of the pen. I'll have a look at what other kind of feeders are available.
LolaLayla
I have CD's up to try to stop magpies stealing the eggs from the eglu but nothing seems to stop them
cd8jbr
My ex-batts chase off magpies, jackdaws, crows and anything else they don't like the look of when they are out free ranging! It's quite funny when they chase them and they seem to enjoy it!
Chucky Mama
I'd invest in a treadle feeder type feeder that the chickens have to stand to to open the feed chute.
Flossie G
I'd invest in a treadle feeder type feeder that the chickens have to stand to to open the feed chute. I'll look one up. Many thanks. My girls rarely chase the jackdaws off, though I wish they would! Most of the time they don't seem to notice the invasion.
Flossie G
I have had a quick look at treadle feeders. They are, as a previous post said in this thread, expensive. Given that I seem to have an intractable problem, though, I am considering one. However, they look like they might get messy and jammed. Doubtless, some are better designed than others ... Chucky Mama
To be fair, I didn't like mine as it did get jammed. I made one which is still working well after a year or so. No more problems from other birds or rats.
