Snowy
So I did the deed last night. Turfed Lulu off the nest to eat, drink and poop and replaced her two duff eggs with 7! We have 4 lemon cuckoo pekin eggs and 3 barred wyandotte bantam eggs. She didn't seem to notice the extras and when I next checked she was snuggled down again - she only just fits on them all! I'm a bit worried about lifting her off now as they are all wedged tightly withing her bloomers!! I've put a pot of corn next to her and a dish of water. She is obviously eating the corn as I can feel it in her crop. My goodness, this is like being pregnant all over again but without the discomfort Do any of you bother to candle if using a broody? And if so, when is the earliest it can be done?
Redwing
I candle eggs at day 4 but as its your first time and barred Wyandotte eggs arent the easiest to candle I would suggest leaving it as late as you can before going away
welovemarmite
I am going to be a chicken mummy too!! I have buff sessex bantams, and black scots dumpy. Due date for bantams is tomorrow and sunday for the dumpies. I am so excited. I keep going out to check... Pakora was the broody, but just before we moved her to the new pen, passanda decided to help and they are brooding them together on the nest. So sweet. We did have a squashed egg a couple of days ago with a chick in. Lets hope the other are ok. I candled them but i am a novice. I took away the ones i knew had nothing in and anything i wasnt sure of i left.
Snowy
So exciting isn't it? Will have a go at candling on Friday as we go away early on Saturday - thats if I can prise her off the nest! I haven't managed it so far as the eggs really are tucked into her feathers all the way round! She does have water and grain within reach, and I think she may be getting off the nest in the day when we are out as a few large poos have appeared in the run! mimi5
Oooooo SO exctiting!! I hatched this year for the first time with my pekin hens!!! They drove me to it with their insane broodiness! But Milly was dreadful and never got off the nest even pooing on the eggs!!!! So I had to lift her, be warned I broke an egg this way as it was tucked in her feet feathering and I hadn't realised until I heard it crack as I placed her on the ground! I did find it stressful though and had out of 13 eggs (long story!!! Milly laid an extra and it replaced the one I broke!!! It turned out to be the only girl of the lot!! ) 8 hatch altogether, first batch All 4 of my eggs & one bought egg, but the chick sadly died day 3 3 boys and 1 girl. second batch all bought eggs, 3 hatched, 2 girls and 1 boy! Enjoy and please keep us posted!!!
Snowy
So today is candling day! Not entirely sure how I'm going to do it yet! Think I need to wait until it's dark, but how do I get her off the nest then?? Plus need to find a torch. Think I may just wait it out! Purplemaniacs
So today is candling day! How exciting. DD's boyfriend helped me candle our eggs on day 10 as recommended by Redwing and it was amazing, I could not believe you could see it move until I saw it for myself. I have fallen in love with hatching it is a great experience although a worry too Let us know how you get on with your candling. welovemarmite
its not looking like i am going to get any. day 18 for the bantams was last thursday and day21 for the dumpies was yesterday. I thought I would give it until wednesday.... shame they havent hatched as i have two broody mums who are sharing the nest duty. (they would not agree to two separate nests). I guess its too late now to get more eggs for them to try again.

Snowy
Any news welovemarmite? Back home from hols and she is still sat tight on her eggs! My chicken sitter has been making sure she has corn and water in reach and from the number of broody poos in the run, she has been getting off the nest each day for a break. No eggs candled, I couldn't work out how to do it in time, but she hasn't discarded any yet!
welovemarmite
THere are a few other posts from me on the forum which will give you the updates. But i have two chicks and had to take them away from mum and put them in a broodie. However, mum is still sat tight on the nest, minus eggs as they were way over due! Purplemaniacs
Hope you had a good holiday Snowy, glad to hear Lulu is sitting tight. We candled our eggs on day 10 and 18. But not sure how you manage with a broody much easier to take them out of an incy. Can you do it when she leaves the nest to poo Good luck.
