Alis girls
I know there are a few vets/vet nurses on forum. Our ginger tom who is a sweet natured fella has been cross and hissy since we got back off hols on Tues pm and today we noticed his lovely tail is droopy. Hes seeing vet this pm. Our friend has been looking after him and is now abroad but mentioned no probs. I googled problem and then wishes I hadnt. Any one any advice etc. At what stage would they remove a tail? Thanks

Daphne
I don't but one of our cats lived to a ripe old age with a permanent kink in his tail - we think it must have been shut in a door before he came to us. Try to keep your spirits up and let us know what the vet says.
Minnie&Moose
Good luck at the vet's. Our cat had something similar on one occasion - it turned out to be an abscess from a bite wound that I hadn't noticed (he has a hugely fluffy tail). As the swelling went down (he was given antibiotics and painkillers) his tail gradually resumed a more normal posture - but it took a day or so before he was carrying it fully erect again. I did panic at the time, assuming that he'd broken it and would have to have it amputated (it was dragging on the floor behind him when we first spotted it!), but fortunately it was fixable. Hope all's well with your cat.
Alis girls
Thanks - vet seems to think its a bite - gave him steroids and antibiotics and Metacam to be given orally for a few days. We have to take him back if still worried on Monday otherwise just wait and see. He (our cat not the vet) when we had dinner came and asked for his yoghurt pot lid (he likes to lick the lids off yog and muller rice) Must be a good sign ( I hope) and yes a very bad habit but he was gvien this as a treat when he broke his leg 2 yrs back and hasnt forgotten. Vet nurse adv me not to google His tail is superb and to lose it would be so sad - hes a lean fella - ginger all over with a very long slim tail which quivers and is always held high. However we agreed we would rather have him with no tail than not at all. OH (soppy so and so) sat in back of car and I could hear him cooing " are you alright darling?" - I replied "yes fine thanks" - " not you the cat" charming. Thanks for good wishes. Seagazer
My elderly cat had a droopy tail last year (I think - I had a thread on here) We took her to the vets and they said it wasn't broken but weren't too sure why it was droopy. She had various jabs and it did eventually get a bit better although it still appears to be a bit sensitive and she doesn't seem to have full movement ie I've not seen it go straight up in the air at all. Hopefully your cat's tail will improve too.
Alis girls
Managed to get Metacam down him today with a bit of yog and left over KFC chicken with coating removed (vets look away please at unhealthy cat feeding). Tail was at half mast today but this evening the kids cheered when it went upright for a few mins. Vet shaved it so it looks really funny. Omletina Kyckling
My girls are maine coons and have magnificent tails - Freja came in a few months ago with her tail hanging right down from the middle of her tail so awful to see as it's a magnificent specimen!! I took hr to the vets and it was a bit or injury in her case too. She had an anti inflammatory and painkiller and then was on metacam fora week. The vet said her tail could be affected for up to six weeks, and may not come back up, but she said it was rare for them to have to amputate a tail. Anyway to cut a long story short, she recovered full use of her tail after about 2 weeks and all was well. She managed to damage her tail again a few weeks ago, at the base, qnd was in a lot of discomfort but after another anti inflammatory antibiotic injection she came around much quicker that time. I'm just hoping for the sake of my bank balance she doesn't make a habit of it!!!
Alis girls
Glad to hear a happy tale (sorry). Sandy's tail is at full mast - looks slightly poodle-ish cos vet shaved some of it. Hes back to fussy pussy and loves a cuddle. The vet shaved a bit of fur off and it reminds us to be careful. cats are very careless with their tails. His is lovely and when he broke his leg the vet nurse asked if his tale always twitched - her cats did too and its something not all cats do.
