I'm wondering if anyone subscribes to any poultry magazines and if so, which ones?

 

I have been reading some magazines donated to me recently, including Country Smallholding, which I quite like, but to be honest because it is full of other animals (which is interesting!) I don't know if it's worth the subscription price because I wouldn't get the most out of it.

 

Thoughts? Do people even subscribe to mags, or rely on the net?

 

I don't know what I would do without my Gardeners' World and Grow Your Own

A friend bought me a subscription to Practical Poultry a few years ago, and I renewed it for a couple of years. It had some helpful stuff in, but it's mainly focused at people who breed and show hens, not back garden henkeepers. I also got really fed up with the poor quality of editing and journalism (in my view) and I decided not to renew, there's more information on the internet and it's easier to find.

I am still a newbie really (steep learning curve!) and will be having my 1 year of chicken keeping anniversary on the 1st oct!

 

I am always reading about chicken keeping!!!!! I have a subscription to Practical Poutry and also Your Chickens. Practical Poultry I have found very informative, obviously not all the articles appeal but I've just re-newed my subscription (6 mths first time) for a year and got to choose a free book! They ran a very interesting project/study comparing plastic coop verses traditional wooden coop (same area set up & hens) over a year with an update each issue.........very interesting reading!! Your chickens is different as it's really for backgarden chicken keepers (like me) the articles are shorter. I've a 6 mths subscription which I probably won't re-new.

 

The thing I refer to the most and can reccomend is my Haynes Chicken Manual!!! I was always reading it in bed My hubby has now nick namned me "chicken girl"

I've a subscription to Practical Poultry, it does have some interesting articles but as Olly said it's not really aimed at back garden keepers. I got a really good deal which is why I keep it but I probably wouldn't otherwise. I pick up Your Chickens when I see it in the supermarket but come to Omlet when I need info!

I will definitely look at your suggestions! I like getting info off the net, but I also like reading magazines for extra info, so may treat myself to a subscription.

 

BTW Olly, I know what you mean about poor editorial. I used to be a magazine editor for an international mag, and I am forever picking mistakes in books, mags, Internet articles... drives my partner mad!

We have lots of magazines at work and I like flicking through the Country Smallholding types with different animals especially at Lambing time. Farmers Weekly is interesting to read about Schmallenberg, price trends but a bit tractor/machinery heavy so tend to read it when we're on the Lambing night shift with nothing else to do!

 

I subscribe to Practical Poultry and have done for a few years - they get sent to home so don't always read them when am at Uni but like to catch up on others set-ups, new products and info etc.

 

Have recently bought Your Chickens because I wrote an article for them, and just written another article for Fancy Fowl magazine which is more focused on showing but they want to be more open to show-newbies (which is where I step in ) and should be a regular thing so may subscribe to that!

I love Fancy Fowl, it is very much aimed at the chicken show world but has really interesting articles on husbandry, breeds, breeding and genetics too

 

Its the only dedicated poultry magazine that doesnt treat the reader as if they were a five year old IMHO

Thank you for the idea on Fancy Fowl, Redwing. I will definitely consider this one and Practical Poultry (as it seems so popular) my birthday is coming up so a subscription is usually a good present to suggest to family
