ubereglu
Hi, I start my second year at university in September and will no longer be in halls of residence. One thing I hated about my first year was the inability to compost or dispose of food waste in an eco-friendly way, as at home we try to compost everything we can. Do any of you know of any small scale wormeries or compost heaps I could get hold of which are relatively inexpensive? The house I will be living in does have a very small garden, so I'd at least have somewhere to put it, and ideally I would be able to take it back home at the end of the academic year for when I'll then change accommodation again. Any ideas?
Egluntyne
There are umpteen websites with details of making wormeries from inexpensive or used household items. Here and here are a couple of examples. It's amazing what you can do with oddments such as an old crate and Irn Bru can or two if you are inventive. merlina
It's worth checking out your local council website (your permanent address and your term-time address) Many offer various discounts on composters (I, for eg, got a £90 compost bin for £ This is the link we use : http://www.leics.gov.uk/index/environment/waste/reduce_and_reuse/compost_pages/food_waste_digesters.htm also http://www.getcomposting.com/ The offers change from time to time so it's worth checking back regularly Edited August 13, 2012 by Guest
Bramble
It's well worth keeping an eye out for "worm city" wormeries on ebay. Their models usually sell for £50++++ (+delivery) but quite often they have "seconds" on ebay (with trays that are slightly damaged) I got one for less than £30 including delivery and am thrilled with it, arrived the next day and it's brilliant! Yes, it's a second, yes a couple of corners are a bit chipped but nothing that stops it working as it should and I wouldn't notice if i didn't know. Perfect size for a small garden too. The day I bought mine I think they listed about 12 seconds as "Buy it Nows" - they'd sold out of them within a couple of hours!!!
The Dogmother
I'd also suggest the local authority websites as they usually have good deals, also try asking on your local freecycle/freegle boards.
