Such a lovely eggy surprise!! :)

Recommended Posts

After what has felt like a real struggle with getting to grips with this chicken keeping lark, I had a lovely surprise just now 6 of my 7 girls have laid today.

The !eggwhite! is Martha's 4th and is huge

The !eggblue! is Margaret's, she hasn't laid for over a month after going through a partial moult, a myco spell and antibiotics, pecking, a whole load of stress with other bits. TBH I really thought she wouldnt lay again as we just seem to have had problem after problem, but I also just wanted a healthy hen, wasn't too fussed if she didnt lay as long as she was happy.

The other 4 !egg! are from my usual layers although only 3 of those have been laying for more than 4 weeks.

I'm not going to get too excited but it finally feels like all the hardwork is paying off :D

:dance: Well done those girls :clap:

The egg top left looks long and thin, it amazes me the different shapes that you get, before chickens an egg was an egg but now it is fascinating to see how the eggs differ and how they change at times. I weigh and record all my eggs

Latte who is 4 years and 9 months laid an egg today and one yesterday not bad for an old hybrid girl, she only lays occasionally now.

I weigh and record all mine too  and also keep a note of the 'cost' of the eggs, which takes into account all we've spent on everything for the girls and i think we are at £3.27 per egg

The white one was 73g, which is one of the biggest we've had, and it is quite long and torpedo-like lol

Love your collection of eggs today, angeluk69! :D

I would really like to weigh mine, they are also different sizes and shapes so would be great to record the weight like you are. Some of the large ones we've had are surprisingly big (poor hen!)

I love that you've worked out how much each egg costs - £3.27!! Do you just add everything spent so far and divide each egg?

I have a little spreadsheet, which as everything I've spent including feed, vets bills, feeders etc etc on it. It would actually be a much higher amount if I had had to buy my wooden coop, but a friend kindly donated her old one to me.

My spreadsheet counts up the total eggs from each hen, the average weight and the cost per egg.

It was quite a shock oing out to the girls today to find 6 eggs as I'm also doggy sitting here this week and one of the dogs does like to shout t the girls, I kept thinking 'here we go again with stressed hens!' I've definitely got a housefull...3 dogs, 4 cats, 7 chickens, and the tortoise. I must be mad!
