I hatched 12 chicks for school and I "kept" 3 bantam hens as I couldn't give them all away!!

 

I bought a cheap wooden coop just to see how we got on, to see if I liked the whole chicken idea...

 

My bantams are now 16 weeks old and last week I went to a chicken keeping course.

The lady had an eglu(on a walk in run /aviary and on a table)

 

Anyway I fell I love with the eglu!

 

I am now looking for a second hand one but need some things considering first...

 

I have 3bantams. I assume thast enough space (I'm hoping for a 3m run)

 

I cannot move my eglu so will be in situ.

 

Do I sit it on earth, or put in a layer of hard wood chip/ bark?

How do you clean the inside of the run without wasting through hands and knees?!

 

The end (with the door) will almost butt up to the shed as will be parallel with the back fence, can I open the run another way?

 

I've seen someone has cut in a side door, this would be ideal, how easy is this?

 

How often do you have the run flooring material (and how do you do it)

 

There's loads of info on. Leaning the eglu itself, which is so easy, but it's the run I am concerned about

A 3m run is fine for 3 bantams. It is best to put them on hardwood chips as it stops the run getting muddy so is better for fluffy bantams and tree surgeons can give it you for free. Bark is not the best thing to use as mould on bark can be harmful to chickens. I shovel out the old chippings when it looks like it needs it but I have the eglu go with side door and not the classic. Many people on here have an eglu house in a run they have built or have had built for them so could be an option if you want to make it easier to clean them out. Hope this helps

Personally, I only use my Eglu as a nursery coop for my summer hatch, I am delighted they are now integrated into the main flock, as it is such a faff to clean the Eglu. I know lots of people use the Eglu happily, but I find the cube SO much better and easier to clean. Maybe they are suppler than I, but I can't see how you can clean the run without getting on you hands and knees. So what I am suggesting is maybe see if you can pick up a 2nd hand cube? You will keep your spine intact and have space to add a few more hens, when chickenitis strikes. Sadly there is no cure for this highly contagious disease which is rife on this forum, just temporary relief when adding more hens, which you can do in the cube

I don't have enough space for anything much larger. I love the cube but would consume my garden!!

I am thinking about adding a side door like someone on here has

Before I upgraded to a WIR, I had an eglu and 3m run with 3 hens on soil. I used Hemcore or Easibed as flooring which are both brilliant for drying out the poos and mean you don't actually have to clean out the run every often. You do have to keep the run dry though (shower curtain over the top does the trick). I used to pick up the poos I could reach easily but the others just got dried up by the bedding.

 

As for cleaning, I did it every couple of months (less often in dry months). The easiest way I found was to get someone to help you lift the whole run and eglu a few feet to the side, rake up the soiled bedding into old compost/feed bags, sprinkle down Stalosan F (or Bio-dry) disinfectant and some garden lime, a new layer of bedding then put the whole thing back in place.

Your walk in run is the exact thing I would love!! I'm just short of space, and have a husband who isn't as tolerant as me!!

 

I have hard wood bark in the current run, would that be ok?

I didn't realise you had to cover the run for rain protection, will look into that!!

I am the opposite of chuckmum6, I prefer the eglu to the cube and find the eglu much easier to clean than the cube. But I am in the minority, most omletteers prefer the cube.

 

My eglus are on paving slabs and I then use aubroise or easibed in the run and the nest box.

 

I am sure you will love the eglu or the cube whichever you choose, I seem to think that the cube and run takes up about the same ground area as the eglu and run but gives a more useable area for the chooks. The area is squarer rather than tapered with the eglu run, please check I may have got this wrong, there are lots of dimensions on the Omlet shop website.

It happened to me too.

 

I had two and within a week the two became four. Then I added three ex batts, and four more hybrid girls over the years.

 

Then I discovered the joys of hatching in an incy

 

I now have four bantams girls and a boy that hatched at Easter and four more bantams that hatched at the end of the summer.

My 3 were from a hatch of 12 I did at home with my toddlers, and gave 9 to my old school and kept 3 as they were too cute!! (it was actually 4 but one was a boy so he went to school with the others!)

I just rehomed 8 girls complete with Cube , 2 metres of run, and 2x 2 WIR and an Eglu and run...

I already have 4 Eglus. (don't ask.... )

As long as the Eglu's are on tables they are easier to clean than the Cube IMO...

And I mostly poo pick through the port anyway!

 

But I have to say I find the runs an absoluute pain to clean.. taht said I use the runs as a stand alone run for on the rass and they are great and really easy to move minus the house. and secure...
