I feel like running away from my run!

Recommended Posts

I decided today as it wasnt raining (yay) to tackle the run inside sglu run. Depsite bad back and OH having man flu I dug the stuff out. I have some hemp stuff suitable for hens and other farm animals and the girls and trodden it into a concrete type mess. Two sackfuls later I was losing the will to live. Put sanitiser down and fresh stuff. I honestly don't know how to do this. I am assured this an auboise sort of stuff and dont want to pay P&P if I can help it as OH might grumble. Like many others I spend way too much on the gals "cos we're worth it" they cry. :D I have tried bark it stinks. A chicken mum I know said put down sturdy tarp and put stuff on top and you can sweep it off. Any bright ideas greatfully received. At least the girls loved it and it smelt less rank.

Well done for tackling it! I have not found any good solutions & end up with the same compacted poopy problem after a few months. I've tried easybed but am sticking with bark chips as even with the run covered it absorbed too much water.

When I attended an omlet course years ago, the lady there said she kind of layered the bedding, adding more on top, using sanitiser, then digging it all out every once in a while!

I've always put a thick layer of gravel on the soil and for the last three years it's been wonderful. Summer 2012 I didn't put down extra gravel and I really regretted it this year. OH and I had to dig out a thick layer of squelchy smelly mud, we put down stalosan and then six bags of large size gravel. It cost about fifteen pounds and I know the run floor will survive the rest of winter whatever it brings. I've never regretted using gravel but did regret not putting it down last summer.
