chocolateeclaire
There is a lot written about pale combs but one of my chickens now has a very yellow comb and is yellow around her eyes. This obviously means she has some sort of problem with her liver and I dont suppose there will be a good outcome. Any ideas Claire
sandyhas3chucks
Don't panic yet... It can also be that she is not laying eggs?. The yolk colouring is reabsorbed ( or something along those lines) IT can be quite common, so don't jump to wrong conclusion .... How is she, ? Laying? Drinking? eating? how is her Poo? How old is she? Is her Tummy swollen?
chocolateeclaire
Thanks for the reassurance. She appears to be eating and drinking but none of mine have laid eggs since last summer. I think she is about 3 years old. She is definately a bit subdued and looks a bit fatter than normal and cant comment on her poos as all mine free range. Egghead68
Does her abdomen feel squishy?
Egluntyne
It's probably just her pigments building up again if she isn't laying. Are her legs yellow too? When she goes back into lay, it will fade. If she seem well in other respects I wouldn't worry.
chocolateeclaire
Sadly it didnt end well as I took her to the vet to be put down this morning - she was too weak to come out of the cube. My vet said she was very underweight (which always makes me feel so guilty!!) but she is doing a post mortum for free just to see what the damage to the liver was and make sure that it is nothing that can affect the others. mollyripkim
Oh sorry to hear that, at least you will know what was wrong. My vet also commented that one of my girls was underweight but in fact she was fine (breeder checked for me), that was two years ago, still happy and still the same weight. (I am a bit paranoid and weigh them occasionally). Anyway what I was trying to say was don't feel guilty, others will say that they hide their illness very well too. Egghead68
Sorry to hear that.
suebee
What an awful shock for you... Don't blame yourself. You clearly did what you could, with little idea of what could have been wrong. As mollyripkim said, they hide illness well, and at least you'll get to know what the problem was... Sounds like a good, professional vet you've got there. chocolateeclaire
My vet was great and rang me this morning to let me know that there were no untoward parasites that I need to worry about and it was actually her heart that was in failure causing a build up of fluid that in turn put pressure on other organs like the liver. She also told me that she had been eating recently as had undigested food in her stomach. Including the euthanasia she only charged me £15.00!! So I dont feel so bad and am glad that her suffering was short. Claire
Egghead68
Sounds like there was nothing anyone could have done. I am sure she had a very happy life with you.
suebee
It's good to know there's nothing to affect the rest of your flock. A most helpful vet too, it seems.
superkitty
So sorry to hear about your girl, but it sounds like there was nothing you could have done. And your vet sounds fab!
