Guest
I have a terrible fear of spiders - I once had to (indirectly) get the fire brigade out to get rid of one (I didn't dial 999 - I phoned a friend and she phoned her hubby, who was a fireman, who popped inon the way back froma call to get rid of it. ) I am also filled with terror at the prospect of going down stairs I've never been down before - I get dizzy, my heart goes, I sweat. We went to Mexico on honeymoon, and visited Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza. The centre point of the ruins is a huge Maya pyramid which you can climb up to the top, and apparantly you get an amazing view. The steps are REALLY steep, and I knew I would never get back down, but Chookiehubbie went up, but because the steps atre so steep he had to come down on his bum, but even watching him do that made me ill, and I threw up. Not pretty....
Cate in NZ
I've just heard that London Fire Brigade are coming into my work today, 1 of the HV's has arranged is so that new parents can get advice on dealing with fires etc, also get free smoke alarms, exit ropes etc. Apparently as many staff as possible are invited. My ideal day, the opportunity to ogle fireman and re-revise my dealing with fire contingency plan
The Dogmother
You lucky, lucky Girl Kate A! I am sooo envious Chookie - I did something similar in Thailand - Climbed up a stupa (Temple thingy) and couldn't get down - had to get some bloke to come and rescue me - I went down behind him grabbing onto his shoulders! Won't do that again in a hurry.

Sheilaz
By the way, how are you today, Sue (CrookedChicken)? Thought it was really brave of you to post when you were feeling like that. But totally the best thing to do, you're never on your own here, so I hope that makes you feel more able to cope on a bad day. My heart goes out to you all with phobias, esp. ones which affect day to day life. I freak at mice & spiders if caught unaware, but can mostly avoid or rationalise. Makes me realise though, that a lot of these things are borne out of a healthy fear of danger..a phobia is when the fear has gone into overdrive. So, anything you can do to break the fear down into small manageable portions is a good idea, & dwell on the times that you have made progress & survived an incident. My bro. was finding a phobia of cockroaches made work/travel very awkward...had therapy & even has one tatooed on his forearm to help him face it ( ..he never does things by halves! ) Not over it, but able to deal with it. Do tell us how you are getting on, wishing you all the best for some really good, untroubled days, love,
Crooked Chicken
Thanks Sheila for your words of wisdom. I do feel a lot better now that hubby's back and I have some company in the house again (not that my 2 children aren't company!!). Great idea your brother had with the tattoo. Though I don't feel quite up to that yet , and anyway my tattoo would end up looking like a brown birthmark wouldn't it. Eeeeeuuuuwwww As you say, I don't think I'll EVER be over it, but my aim is to deal with it better. The most peculiar phobia I've heard of (again it was on TV) was a fear of feathers. Be it a bird or just a single feather lying on the ground. She was utterly terrified. Strange isn't it. Anyway I feel a million times better than the other day. I just need to catch up on the forum now, saw an interesting topic called "one man, three ladies and a pair of boxers". Well I say, don't know who dreamt up that title, but is "ladies" quite the right word!! That poor GRD and Dan - driven into submission. . . . . . . . I like it

The Dogmother
My ex is absolutely petrified of birds and feather too - makes me laugh when Rosie insists on showing him her hens when he drops her off
