I picked up a couple of ex batts on Saturday. My other 3 have manage to workout the cube steps - abit of hoping and flying involved but am worried about the new girls. So, I had an idea to wrap garden string around the steps so that they are not so slippy and it gives them somehting to grip onto. Is this a good idea or not?

When I got my cube my pekin bantams couldn't manage the ladder, omlet suggested cutting up car matting and using cable ties attach it to the rungs. I didn't (seemed fiddly & didn't think it would help!)and instead I got stiff green garden mesh and cable tied that over the ladder, worked a treat! Other people have proped old wooden ladder on top of the cube ladder.

Hope it's going well with your ex-bats!!??

Well done on giving a home to some Batties :D Although the girls are coming from 'enriched cages' now, their legs do tend to be a bit stronger than Battery Hen's would have been so I'm sure they'll adjust to the ladder quite quickly. Not so sure garden twine is a good idea as they might get their feet tangled up in it? Have you got something at the bottom of the ladder that they can hop onto? We've got an upturned terracotta strawberry pot next to ours and they all get up into the (cube green) no problem...from our Orpington Banty to our teeny Seramas

Well, this morning the ex batts came down the steps no problem!! So will see how they manage going up them tonight - thats if they put themselves to bed as I have done it the past couple of nights. I was thinking of tying the string really tightly around the rungs but they seem to managing okay at the moment so will leave it for now.

Yes, they do seem to be alot stronger than my last lot of ex batts. Though they are still missing lots of feathers :(

I had some turf I had dug up so I made a mound out of that at the bottom of the steps which has made it easy for all of them to get onto the ladder. :D

I got Flight so Fancy to make me a wooden ladder, cost £25.00 including delivery. Beautifully made and even the little Frizzles can now reach the cube.

oh, greetings from Barbados, on holiday and still checking in every day to make sure I am not missing anything.....How sad am I, who said keeping Chickens was addictive
