Rice cooker recipes please

Recommended Posts

That's funny, I just came on here to recommend a book I bought. The Ultimate Rice Cooker cookbook, by Beth Hensperger/Julie Kauffman. It's packed full on information, recipes and ways to use the rice cooker.

For example if you switch it on to quick cycle, heat some oil or butter add some onion or spices etc then stir in the rice and then water. Then reset it to cook on regular cycle. It hadn't occurred to me to fry ingredients in it first. A rough example from the book is --

Vegetable Paella - fry chilli, onions and peppers. Cook til softened, add garlic, oregano, paprika, courgette & tomatoes. Cover and cook for 5. Stir in rice, stock, saffron. Salt & pepper, continue programme. When it switches to 'keep warm' scatter peas on top. Close cover and let it steam for 15 mins.

It has lots if ideas which you can adapt for yourself.

What a good idea for a thread. Congrats on your new purchase Catie. I haven't got my rice cooker yet but I can feel one coming on very quickly.. My daughter says I should declutter my kitchen first to make room for it! - I am debating between the 8 in 1 by Tefal or the cheaper Cookworks one - my two sisters in law have one of those each but I think they are just using them for plain rice. I want to do more .... I have been looking at that Ultimate rice cooker book, Patsy it sounds as if it will be a useful partner to my new rice cooker when it comes.

I have got the 8 in 1. I know I'll use it for other stuff. I needed a new slow cooker and this increases the capacity I had on my old one, which for me is a bonus. This morning I had cinnamon and apple porridge waiting when I got up. Very yum.

Will look at the cookbook, would really like some type of spicy rice...

PS I did declutter and it has replaced my tassimo machine which I never used. Just need to get round to putting it on eBay or gumtree.

Thank you Patsy based on your post I did a nice spicy rice.

Initially I put in a chilli, mushrooms and small chopped onion on the quick setting for five or so minutes. I then added brown and wild rice and re set it to the brown setting. Near the end a steamed a piece of salmon over the top of it. I then flaked that in and added soy sauce along with peas and sweet corn. YUM YUM one pot dinner

Has anyone used the slow-cooker function on their rice cooker?

I took the plunge and am making a beef casserole in mine today but am slightly nervous whether it will do a good job.

Also does anyone know a good slow-cooker book that doesn't spend too many pages on starters, drinks etc. I'd like to find one that concentrates on hearty main courses.

I have the tefal 8 in 1 rice cooker and I have used the slow cooker function many times. However I cant get on with it as I find it just too slow and things are not cooked as I like them. You can only set the function for 9 hours and its not long enough for the things I cook which means I have to be around to reset and factor in longer cooking times. I guess it would depend on what you use it for though. I have now bought myself another dedicated slow cooker as it doesn't work for me.

In relation to cook books I have many but tend to use only the odd recipe out of them. None that are fab enough to recommend. I find that mostly I bung and go with my slow cooker, or adapt something I have found on the internet having googled a recipe. I then bookmark any successful recipes. My ipad is becoming my cook book. I am never very successful with beef, in my experience it is best cooked a day ahead. I did the following recently and it was good but I bet someone has a better recipe. Please????

Thank you, that is useful and thank you for your effort.

I'll carry on and see how it is in a couple of hours, I usually cook casserole on the hob so I'll transfer it if I'm not happy.

I think i'll copy you and make a file of recipes that work.

I've got so many cook books it seems daft to buy more that might not be what I want.
