Chicken Shirl
Hi, a friend of mine has some chickens that have developed worts around their eyes.....Some of them are now going blind. Have any of you lovely people any idea what it can be, and how we can treat it...I am at a loss myself. Going to the vet is not an option, as the vets here in Tenerife are not that well up on chicken illnesses...Plus my friend doesn't have the money for vets bills....I hope you can help me with this. Egluntyne
Not something I've heard of tbh. I wonder if it is something specific to warmer climates? Or maybe fowl pox?
Chicken Shirl
I have found out today that they are living with pigs. That can't be good...Can it
superkitty
Is there any chance of getting some photos of the warts and putting them on here? I bet someone (not me, i know practically nothing ) would be able to shed some light for your friend?

Chicken Shirl
You were right....My friend has looked at the example photos on line, and it is Fowl Pox.....There is another case of it on a farm close by. They are culling the affected hens. I am worried now about my flock.

Egghead68
Hang on - I am not sure your friend needs to cull. It's not that serious an infection, is it? I think affected hens usually get better spontaneously (mine did). If I find out more I'll post a link.
Egghead68
http://www.backyardchickens.com/a/avian-pox-how-to-treat-your-chickens-for-avian-pox I think you can just leave it. Unless it is in their respiratory tracts the pox should slough off and the chickens should be fine. Once they have recovered they will have immunity. Please don't cull unless it's really necessary!
