Any ideas for sun porch

Recommended Posts

I probably won't be very good at explaining what I'm thinking of but here goes. Our house is south facing at back and gets a lot of sun but unfortunately being Ireland a lot of rain.I don't think I want another room to clean which is what a conservatory would be so am thinking something like a car porch at back ie roofed but otherwise open where we could sit out even if damp but warm(optimistic I know) The problem then is roofing material I don't want that corrugated plastic stuff but would need something that doesn't block the light inside.Has anyone seen or done something similar any ideas would be welcome.

Can you not put up a pergola with nice thick 'beams' and then put a plastic roof across it? It need not bee the corrugated stuff. You can get straight roofing that is plastic and which is ofen used for safety reasons, on conservatories that are overlooked (in case someone throws something out of a window and smashes the glass onto someone in the conservatory). The pergola would need to be slightly higher at the back than the front so any rain water runs off. You could even have a gutter running along the far side into a barrel to catch the water (for your plants and chooks). For added protection, if you wanted, you could put trellis work on the sides and have a clematis or rose or both climbing up it.

Great ideas already, yes Shabby Chic what your suggesting sounds good and it would be ideal to recycle the water although we haven't had any hosepipe bans since the70's maybe this will be the year! Don't look for photos anytime sun, this project will take a few months esp.if OH is doing it

I have always wanted one of those big American houses with a wraparound porch.

Roofing....the corrugated platic is rubbish. It will break ,flap & also be very noisy when it rains. Go for a proper plastic conservatory roof material, which is robust, slim & looks good. It comes slightly tinted too if you like,Smokey to keep the area cool or palest blue which makes the are light & bright.

Our hen pen is even made with this roofing. Its also easy to wash (it will get grubby!)

I love the idea of chunky beams too.
