Food for a cat with wired jaw

Recommended Posts

My little cat - 'little' in the sense that he’s the youngest - was hit by a car on 20th Feb; he had an op to wire his jaw on 21st and then had another op on 25th to redo the wired jaw (don’t want to go into details - other than to say a complaint has been made to the RCVS). Since the accident he’s lost just over 650gs in weight and is not eating despite various drugs to try and kick start his appetite. If he continues to lose weight the vet will have to insert a feeding tube – we go for a weigh in on Wednesday. We have tried cooked, raw, standard cat food, posh cat food; blitz, not blitz – but nothing. A couple of licks and then he’s just not interested - Do any of you have any ideas?

Some cats prefer slightly more solid food with wired jaws. Have you tried feeding Liquivite? It is a specially made smooth cat food for nursing cats like yours. It can be lapped and is extremely palatable. You can dab a little on the front of their paws to get them going, they can't resist cleaning themselves up and once they lick it off they get a taste. Warmed food is always more palatable too so gently frying some tinned fish may help.

OK I am going back many years now (about 1970!!!) but we had a cat who had been poisoned and wouldn't eat anything. The vet said to smear a little bit of marmite on his mouth as cats hate feeling dirty and he would lick it off - the taste would then make him drink and eventually he would feel hungry. I was on school holidays and I did it every few hours and he pulled through. He did lick it off straight away each time and the vet said that this had saved his life.

Now, it may well be that this would be an absolute no no now due to the salt content in marmite but it certainly worked for him. Just thought I would throw the idea in there for consideration
