Pecking - where to go from here?

Recommended Posts

Well I have had this ongoing problem with little Betsy having her bottom (base of tail) pecked. I do not know who is doing the pecking but it mainly seems to happen at night. It is apparent that Betsy is well and truly at the bottom of the pecking order and in fact I am starting to get a bit concerned. She is always last in line for anything and she's looking a bit moth-eaten now. She is the smallest of my girls too. I have been using anti-peck and purple spray regularly and have even resorted to stockholm tar, but still no improvement. She still has a sore-looking bald patch (which seems to be getting bigger) at the base of her back where her tail starts. I am starting to worry whether she is being allowed to eat enough food now as well as she does look a lot smaller than the others.

As I say, I cannot work out who is doing the pecking. Should I go for these bumper bits all round and see if that helps?

Advice greatly appreciated. In addition someone I think has now started to eat the eggs  I have posted about that in the Egg section :wall:

I know how you feel having a poor pecked girlie - except I have 2.

I am still waiting for my bumpa bits to arrive but I am hoping they are going to work.

I didn't know much happened at night because they can't see too well.

It may be that it happens earlier while they are waiting to be let out in the morning ?

If my bumpa bits don't work then I am a bit stuck. Separating her might be on option for me but as you don't know who the culprit is then that would be difficult for you.

Perhaps you could separate her and another gentle hen until your pecked one has got her feathers back and caught up on some eating.

I don't know what the best option is for you but I'm sure someone will know.

I wish they could all just get on.
