I bet someone on here will know the answer to this.

 

When you are sowing a new lawn on clay soil, do you rotavate FIRST and then put down sharp sand - or vice versa? Any other tips about sowing a lawn would be most welcome too. I wanted to turf (no patience) but OH wants to use seed as he says we'll have a better lawn in the end.

Sorry but I agree with you, buy turf!

 

I have sown a lawn and turfed, and would never bother with sowing again. The birds ate a lot of it too. OH found a great independent garden centre which sells beautiful turf for £2.99 a square metre, and I laid it myself, which was just like laying carpet. I would probably have spent the same money in seed, going over the patches, and re-seeding.

It's the answer I want -but not OH, who likes a challenge. I expect we'll have a go then resort to turf... Preparation is the same though.
