I am the lucky owner of a secondhand cube and have one of my original three girls left. We are going to look at some new ones tomorrow and wondered if anyone could offer advice on temperaments. I am looking at a columbine, amber, star and coral. A friend of mine said that ambers and corals can be quite nasty but everything I read says differently. My one existing girl is a ranger. They all seem to have good reviews for garden keeping and friendliness, my original three got on really well and I would love the new venture to go the same way

I think the Amber Star is the same as a Merrydale Sweetie, if so Latte is my Merrydale Sweetie and she lives up to her name, she is very friendly, she was one of my original girls, the only one of the 4 left now. She is over 5 and still laying. She used to be top chook but has lost that position after a bit of illness and seperation. I would have another one if I get some more hybrids.

I have no experience of the other two breeds.

We went to a chicken keeping course this morning and were told corals lay massive eggs but can be quite stroppy and flighty. That said, she sat perfectly calm in her cage whilst the ranger she was sharing with was jumping all over her  ... I guess she must have been a very docile specimen!

Well we went for an amber, copper maran and a columbine (skyline) names are betty, margo and doris (who has a huge pom pom on her head), the stars did look a bit jumpy so we went for the maran instead. Heres hoping they all settle in well and lots of lovely eggs to come

well we have had a few problems with the one existing girl pecking the three new ones so we have left 3 together for a few days and snuffles on her own but put them together and they all went to bed happily tonight so maybe we have turned a little chicken corner. Doris the skyline is very nervous even the wind blowing through her pom pom head sends her skitty. The Amber and Maran are starting to approach us. All in all they seem to be 3 very calm birds. Lets hope I don't live to regret saying that

:D
