Guest
Hi there - I use Aubiose which is dried hemp and made for stables. It is brilliant and I have raved about it for a long time now. Friends used it for their horses so I bought some - and I wouldn't use anything else. You can get Hemcore and something else similar I use it in the nest box and also in the trays having first lined the trays with paper. It costs £7 a bale and it goes a very very long way. The pen is open to the elements so that the chickens can experience the rain, snow, wind and sunshine - and really enjoy all the seasons. The 'roof' of the run is fruit netting - to keep the wild birds out - and I have put a couple of cds on it to scare them off even more. There are no places for them to perch - as it is stretched across the wooden posts - the run is 22ft long and about 12 ft wide. I have attached the fruit netting at the sides by looping over the wooden posts, stretching down to the chicken wire, and the 'sewing' it to that with thin green plastic covered wire which you get on a roll (really cheap) and just threaded it through - works a treat. Ladylucan
Thanks for that, i have a little pond in the run with them, which at the moment is filled with bark, but where they forage, they keep kicking the bark into the pond, I may but some wood logging around it to try and keep stuff out, and change to Aubiose, everyone seems to rave about it, so will give it a go, I was just worried about it going all soggy in the wet weather, x
Guest
Well in all the torrential rain and storms it did of course get wet outside - as did everyone's garden, and it did feel 'spongey' underfoot. BUT it did not go all muddy or slippery and it dried out amazingly quickly. I rake it over every couple of days. When it is very wet and the top dries a little I rake that over to too dry the underneath. My blog host is down so I can't upload my post
The Dogmother
I'll second that! It was Dilly who got me onto Hemcore/Aubiose and it really is fabarooni. It has a sort of kiln-dried texture and never gets soggy or slimy like bark does.
