Julia_K
Hi there Three of my girls have developed bald patches on their necks and "tummies", with a few patches of redness that come and go. I can see no lice, mice or eggs and the girls seem OK in themselves. As a routine from the time I've had them, they have been regularly deep-dusted with Total Mite Kill Powder, as has their coop. They also had this in their dustbath. Since the bald patches appeared I have also been dusting them with TMK powder each week. So, obviously that hasn't worked! The poultry vet's opinion is that it is definitely some sort of parasite and has prescribed Panomec Inj (Ivermectin) administered orally now and repeated in two weeks' time. I'm fine with that and hope it works, but having read all of the threads on here I'm still a bit confused as to what to put on them for the best once this is all sorted as there are so many points of view and products. Obviously stay with putting the TMK powder in the coop to combat red mite - but I was thinking a regular spraying of Johnson's Anti-Mite Spray Extra instead of the TMK going forward and some permethrin-based powder in the dustbath? Is that a sensible plan of action and would that plan cover mites, lices and NFM?! Any concise action plans very welcome!
SteveC
Could it be feather plucking / eating? Mine often look quite bare underneath and around their necks - and every so often I catch them plucking each other.
Julia_K
Interesting to know, but unfortunately I don't think it is. I've spent hours just watching them in their run and coop, hoping to see them either peck themselves or eachother and make some sense of it, but nothing... I'll see what the treatment brings and hope that does the trick.
The Dogmother
Your suggestion of treatment going forward is sensible, and coupled with quarterly preventative treatment will keep any mites and lice at bay. The baldness on their tummies could just be seasonal; hard to tell without seeing them, but most of mine shed feathers underneath every summer to cool themselves down. Julia_K
Thank you! By quarterly preventative treatment, do you mean an additional spot on treatment or just to spray the Johnsons Mite Spray on them every quarter?
The Dogmother
I'd recommend a spot-on prescribed by your vet every quarter, with a permethrin based spray* (two treatments of the spray a week apart) on any visible lice or mites. *not licensed for use on poultry in the uk
