Let Down on Gumtree

Recommended Posts

I have been very silly and am not sure if I can resolve the situation...does anyone here have any 'insider knowledge' on how Gumtree works?

I listed a few things recently on the local Oxford Gumtree, rather than my usual E bay, as the postage rates are getting so confusing. I had a response from a woman who wanted to buy the two buggy seat protectors that I listed - 1 new in packet and 1 used a couple of times. They were at £10.00 and she asked if I could post them as she is the other side of Oxford. I agreed to post for the actual cost of £2.60, which she agreed to. There were several e-mails back and forth about this and she sounded very sweet.

I asked for payment either via cash through the post (in which case I was happy with £12.00) or direct into my bank account (I e-mailed her the details.) She agreed to pay into my bank account the following day and sent a lovely e-mail thanking me. As I had to go to the Post Office with a letter anyway the following morning I posted off the seat covers at the same time - whilst awaiting payment.

Yep, you've guessed it....I have heard nothing from her at all. I posted last Friday and no money has appeared in my account or in the post. I e-mailed her last night saying that nothing had been paid and so would she please either pay or let me know if there was a problem; nothing!

Obviously, with E bay I could report her but I am guessing that I have no comeback on Gumtree? I know it was really my own silly fault but I have always found the VAST majority of people are honest and it really didn't even cross my mind that she might not cough up. Equally, I am a little worried that she has my account name, number and sort code but don't think she can do anything with these without a password? I feel such an idiot! :wall:

Oh dear, sorry I can't help with the Gumtree thing but the details you gave her for your bank account would be on any cheque you ever wrote so I wouldn't worry there.

Many years ago on ebay I did not use paypal and posted an item out before I found out the cheque had bounced, the person paid up, begrudgingly

BTW, some folk are decidedly tardy when it comes to paying up

Perhaps I will wait another few days then e-mail her again and say that, unless I receive payment by a certain time, I will report her to Gumtree. I didn't know that you could actually do this! Not sure what they can do as it was probably a stupid thing to do but it may jog her into action.

I know its only a very small amount but, to me, its the principle that matters...how very dare she!
