jackian
This is not my problem but a fellow chicken keeper , so I said I would ask the knowledgeable for an answer . . She has 3 chickens all established as a flock for a couple of years .two bantams were added about a year ago and apart from the usual fisty cuffs they have settled well and mix well. She has 2 nesting boxes but suddenly the last few weeks one of the old girls will not let one of the Bantams into the nest boxes (the same bantam) . The old girl has already laid her egg and often it has already been removed but which ever the one the bantam tries to go in she turfs her out. The poor little bantam then goes on to a perch or the patio and lays her egg which often falls from a great height and she has the makings of an omelette. They are in a large WIR with plenty of space and generally everything is fine. We have never heard of this before and wondered if any of you have and know the answer. sjp
one of two thing spring to mind one is that she's thinking about becoming broody ant the bantam is the lowest in the pecking order so she gets kicked out of the nest box a couple of my low ranking girls do this when they go broody two could be she's gets kicked out of the nest box by girls high up the pecking order so she does the same. but more likely is she's decided that she like's the nest box to her self and zones out when she goes into egg laying mode and takes a while to snap out of it after the egg is laid I've got a few that do that trouble is some of the mid to low ranking girls are a bit Violet Elizabeth about it and trough a right tantrum when they get kicked out or bared from the nest area that they want to lay in normally one in one of they other coops not their own coop
mimi5
When anyone of my pekins goes broody......no others get into the nestbox!!! (Cube nestbox) They just will NOT share and the screaming Sounds like maybe a broody to me? Mine then go in to the anti-broody coop for 3 days!
