Green tomatoes

Recommended Posts

Help! I have a mountain of green tomatoes to use up (Mr W reckons there's about 5kilos)I have a pan of chutney on the stove, that used a kilo up but barely made a dent in the pile. I will make another pan of chutney when I've done this one ( everyone will be getting a jar this Christmas  ) does anyone have any other recipes for using them up? Or variations on the River Cottage Seasonal chutney?

I also have a smaller pile of red tomatoes, they are scheduled for chutney and tomato sauce.

Could you try ripening some of them? I think you have to condemn them to life in a paper bag with a banana or something like that?

Its at times like this that it would be useful to discover you can clean/wash things (kitchen, hair etc) with freshly squeezed tomato juice

On that note, perhaps you could make an Anaemic Mary

I don't think I'm being very helpful am I? I'm sorry I would be if I could be :D

I'm making all my red ones into dried tomatoes in olive oil. So easy and they are much nicer than the ones you buy. As for the green tomatoes, apparently you can use them in cakes, and add them to bread, make fritters and add them to casseroles. I have to say I am still waiting to decide! But it won't be chutney - we have a cupboard full already.

So if anyone else has tried any of the above, or has other ideas, I would be very interested too.

I spoke to my MIL who emailed a recipe for chutney that used up 2.3kg of the green tomatoes. I just have 500g left.... I found a recipe for green tomato jam that I can halve so I may have a go at that.

The ripe tomatoes have almost all gone too, I gave some to my neighbours, we had some roasted with dinner last night and I made a batch of roasted onion and tomato soup.
