What on earth was in my egg?

Recommended Posts

Just found a really hideous thing inside the egg I just cracked. It looks like a crysalis or something. It is an inch long and a quarter of an inch wide and is bloody at one end. It is utterly revolting. Does anyone know what this is or have my hens been invaded by alien beings?

Oh dear, I can imagine that would be a bit offputting!

Trouble is, because of supermarket eggs, we tend to expect every egg to be perfect, but the truth is they can sometimes contain unpleasant surprises. I suspect your 'pupa' (looks a bit like an alien doesn't it?) :? Is a lash that has been encased in the egg - a lump of fleshy material that hens sometimes produce, although usually they are passed alone rather than in the egg. To be on the safe side, I always crack eggs into a small jug before using them. And I dont eat many hard boiled eggs any more :lol:

Crikey - you can't miss that surprise can you  Thanks for sharing!! :D

I have had the odd little bit in my eggs before, nothing's put me off if I can remove the offending item :)

Hope your friend still eats your eggs though, it would be a shame if she was put off completely. Though, my grandmother refuses to eat my hen's eggs because she 'knows' the chickens and finds it weird 'to eat their eggs' - so sometimes you can't change people's mind about food related things

my older hens' eggs have often got bits of blood and/or 'stuff I don't want to look at too closely' in them :vom:

Nothing quite as 'alien' as yours tho!

Like Snowy, I've developed an aversion to hard boiled eggs these days

I cook any eggs like the above that I wouldn't eat and put them in the chooks' treat bowl. Some people think that's a bit weird, but I hate to waste stuff and the protein is good for them
