Nest box and house material

Recommended Posts

Now that Rapport, Hemcore etc are no more I decided to give Easibed a try. Unfortunately I am very disappointed with it, it seems too hard for the nest boxes and doesn't smell anywhere as nice as Rapport.

I used to use Auboise but had trouble with my girls eating it so I now don't know what to use at all  - also all the suppliers round here are telling me everything is selling out as those with horses are trying to find alternative products.

I shall finish this bag of Easibed but I don't want to buy it again.

i am like you i love rapport but i have also tried other alternatives i tried bedmax but found the shavings quite large and once mixed it with a bale of rapport which was better than 2 bales of bedmax in the run so i am now using a bale of snowflake with a bale of rapport which is brilliant but if i cant find an alternative to rapport i will probably stick with snowlake i also tried a bale of bedwell which was about £2 cheaper than rapport but there were some large pieces in it that hadnt been processed properly through the machinery so it looks like i will be waiting to see whats available when the next big clean out is due but snowflake gets the thumbs for me at the moment

:D:D:D:D

I like woodshavings personally. some possible alternatives are

Arden Safemix - cheap, its a shavings and chip mix

Megazorb - expensive but fab, chooks may eat that too though I guess

chopped straw - there are various types such as Bliss or the small bales you get in pet shops

Chunky shavings - Bedmax, this takes ages to compost though

Normal straw - though it has a bad reputation I like it

Just did a Rapport search and this thread came up. I went to get Rapport recently and found it was not available :( I had found it really good and as somewhere in the back of my mine I remembered Easibed being mentioned I have bought that instead but haven't had to start the bag yet. I hope the girls get on ok with it.

How are you all finding it? Have you found anything more similar to Rapport?

I've been using Easibed for years (since Hemcore was no longer available) and am very happy with it. I agree it doesn't have a strong smell but I like the way it does smell and the girls seem quite happy (not sure how they'd tell me they weren't, though  ). It also composts down well and is very reasonable at about £10 a bale.
