chickens in south wales

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know what proportion of Eglu/Cube-owners join the forum? I would have guessed off the top of my head that it would not be more than about one-third, so the fact that people don't post here doesn't mean that there aren't any others in your area.

I discovered that there was another Eglu-owner in my street, but she has never joined the forum.

We find most things in the "Coutrywide farm stores"

Wenvoe is nearest.

we use Auboise in the nestbox, tray and run,it works really, well we buy that from the Bridgend branch. Wenvoe did say they were able to get it from Bridgend for us.

I'm allways looking out for chicken stuff these days!!!

Hi Sara,

I know what you mean about being isolated in South Wales. I don't know of any poultry breeders in South Wales.

I'm from Newport. We have a green eglu which is now in a new permanent run. Its the home of Emily and Betty. We converted the shed and built a 9 foot run extension on it. Kept the Eglu inside because they still like to lay in there.

We also have 6 baby chicks. Three weeks old which we hatched ourselves. They are living in the spare bedroom. They are getting big now and keep escaping from the brooder and pooing everywhere.

Nice to hear that there are more poultry enthusiasts from South Wales.

Coastie.

Hope no-one minds me bumping up an old thread. I just wondered if any there were any other members living in the South Wales area? Reading back through, I can confirm that Steve Howells at the Poultry Mill is fabulous! Really helpful and the chickens are reasonably priced. :D We've had almost all of our birds from him and they are all fully vaccinated and great layers.

Looking forward to meeting some more locals!

Hi Welsh Sarah, your french copper blacks sound fab. I've asked him to keep me a French Blue Maran until they reach POL, they're only 8 weeks old at the moment, so a bit young and I don't have a separate run for them.

Nice to hear of Omlet members living nearby. Wondered where you get your feed from? I go to Arthur John in Cowbridge. They're an agricultural merchants and pretty reasonable. :D

Hello

We're just outside Bridgend and have only had our chooks 4 days :)

I did find it difficult to locate POL pullets, and after some searching, found them on a local farm that we happened upon. The farmer was very friendly, cared very much for the hens welfare and engaged us in conversation about how we were keeping them and offered us some very good advice (especially as this is all very new!). Overall I was very pleased and it was exactly the sort of place I had envisaged buying from.

As it happens the farm is mentioned in last weeks OK magazine, as Charlotte Church buys her chickens from the same farm (she lives in the same village).

Hi Sarah,

We are a bit further over just North of Carmarthen. I was begining to think that I was the only one. Nice to see there are a few of us down here.

I get most of my supplies from Town and Country stores which I think is part of Carmarthen & Pumpsaint farmers.

Got my chooks from a lovely lady called Brenda at Happy hens poultry in Ffarmers. She doesn't breed for a business only as a hobby though and only pure breeds.

bit late coming to this thread but... well, here I am :D

we got our ladies from a farm in Crickhowell (can't remember their name), there's also the Poultry Mill in Brynna, an excellent set up and very helpfull, where we got the hatching eggs couple of weeks ago.

we get feed, garlic powder, redmite powder, Easibed etc. from a little place off Coedcae Lane in Talbot Green, next door to CMS Teamwear.

Hello :D

I'm in Cardiff and got my girls 10 days ago from Steve at Poultry Mill. They have settled in soo well, one started laying the day after I got them. I got 1 blubell, 1 maran and one sussex star. The are all really docile and friendly and well behaved so far.

I don't have an eglu ( not enough pennies to buy one!) but I love this forum so much anyway.

I buy my pellets from Pets at home too but I am going to try countrywide farmers or whatever its called

Hello,

I'm also in Wales (just outside Llandeilo). I get my chicken supplies from Pumsaint/Countrywide stores- they're really good and have got everything I've ever needed. I've got the cube and 6 ex-batts and 3 black rocks (given to me). I've had them since last October and am enjoying every minute of them.

Helena
