Chickabee
Hi, As well as having my lovely 12 chooks, I have 3 dogs (including 1 guide dog pup), 1 snake, fancy goldfish and tropical fish. I had 3 platties in my tropical tank. They keep breeding so I've had lots of cute baby fish. However, one adult has vanished from the tank. It can't have jumped out, there is a tight fitting lid. I've searched the tank and can't find any remains. Could the others have eaten it?
Bramble
If your platy died, then yes, I'm afraid the others will have eaten it It's a bit gross to us, but completely natural to them. The bodies can also get stuck behind things, eg heaters, filters etc, so that might be an option, but I'm afraid he probably has been gobbled up - don't worry though, they will have waited until he died ... sjp
as said the others will have eaten it if it died. it's a longshot but check it hasn't got stuck somewhere
Chickabee
I've checked everywhere. In the filter, behind the heater, in the bubble tube. Must have been eaten. RIP fish with no name
kissinuk
It does happen, but usually there are remains, especially with platties (assuming it was fully grown). Very strange, what other fish do you have in the tank? There's nowhere under the lid it could have jumped is there? I've heard of fish getting stuck around lights before. Chickabee
I only have platties, neons and some other small shoaling fish. No way it could have jumped out, or got stuck in the lid
Chickabee
This is my set up. It's only 35ltrs definitely not overcrowded, and I have lifted out plants etc to try and find said fish
Bramble
Don't worry about it, it happens, they will eat a body and the bones etc just disintegrate, they are so small, they disappear in no time, sadly.

Chickabee
I've been counting fish ever since. They move quite quickly, but I now think there's a couple more missing !
