Clucky the Great
As a fundraising event at school we are doing a "Dragons Den" type challenge and seen as Chicken Hi-Viz jackets hit it off so well (not necessarily for chicken owners but for non-chicken people wanting to buy an interesting Christmas present - all be it a rather expensive one!) I have come up with the idea of chicken pajamas. It is a fun idea and not one that will be made but if it was made of the same material as sports "skins" (thermals that are neopreney) and kind of like a onesie with gaps for wings, head and back end. It would be pajama friendly because it wouldn't have any velcro or bits to dig into the chickens at night. It will be aimed at ex-battery hens mainly as they are the ones that need the extra heat retention if they are re-homed in the winter - or for those chickens that maybe like to free-range in their runs all night and refuse to go to bed in their coop with the door closed, or maybe even chickens that don't have the luxury of an amazingly insulated coop and just need a bit of warmth in those minus temperatures. Anyway I would like your hopefully constructive criticism. Would you buy one of these if you had a chicken in any of these categories - why/why not? How much would you pay? I was thinking maybe £5/6 per pajama because then it would be cheaper for example than an eglu thermal jacket? Have you any questions about the product? Thanks in advance - Clucky
Chickabee
I wouldn't buy one, unless I had some very poorly feathered exbats. You can get knitted jumpers for them. It's a really fun idea though. I don't think many others will have an idea like it . Any prototype pictures?
Clucky the Great
No not yet unfortunately? And do you know if you can buy the knitted ones on the internet? I haven't come across them? I just thought there was a lot of people rehoming ex-batts with a lot of time on their hands!
Chickabee
I think BHWT sell them when they have events. Just had a quick look. There's a website called littlehenrescue. There's even a pattern for a chicken fleece on there
Egluntyne
They don't need them. They would be a source of infection and could be dangerous if caught on fencing, shrubs etc. the BHWT don't advocate the use of the hen jumpers that keep being mentioned, so I imagine the pyjamas would get the same reaction. Chickabee
Oh dear. I had no idea. Think I must of picked that up from another link. Little hens rescue definitely advocate using them
gavclojak
They don't need them. They would be a source of infection and could be dangerous if caught on fencing, shrubs etc I agree and also can you imagine how long it would take to catch and dress them before bed....goodness, maybe chickens are the new Chihuahua....maybe we will start carrying them around in Louis Vuitton bags
redsunset
I strongly suspect gavclojak already has several Vuitton/coach/Chloe bags for transporting the girls to the Bromley shops.......
Olly
can you imagine how long it would take to catch and dress them before bed. It doesn't bear thinking about! I knitted one a long time ago when there was a request on here for jumpers - but the received wisdom now is that most hens don't need them, even moulting/battery rescue hens, and the risk of them getting caught on something is too great. It sounds like a great idea as a project, but presumably you'd want something you could actually sell. I don't know how many hi-viz/tweed jackets Omlet have sold, but I don't think I'd buy them! What about neoprene covers for chicken drinkers, to keep them warm in winter and stop them freezing over? I'd go for that!
gavclojak
What about neoprene covers for chicken drinkers, to keep them warm in winter and stop them freezing over? I'd go for that! Exactly! I have seen them for rabbit bottles, so maybe an adapted version? Guess there is already a patent on those though, I think the omlet coats are great for novelty value and I guess they will sell a lot over Christmas to people who know chicken keepers rather than the keepers themselves! The emperor's new clothes one thinks:)
gavclojak
I strongly suspect gavclojak already has several Vuitton/coach/Chloe bags for transporting the girls to the Bromley shops....... And you are quite correct redsunset but a am a mulberry girl! Just to prove I am not shallow I did sacrifice my mulberry bayswater to eBay and with the proceeds brought a brand new cube:((((
redsunset
And what a worthwhile sacrifice it was too!.........

Chickabee
No, but I have started to think about what I could sell to get a cube !
