Impacted/sour crop....or both????

Recommended Posts

So my little hen Florence who some of you will remember was SO poorly in the spring, but did pull through has been off colour :( Short day light hours and my new job giving me silly hours :( mean I hardly see the gang awake! This all kicked off just as Willow dog was becoming poorly too!!!!!! ( Pancreatitis in another thread!!)

Long story short I believed she had an impacted crop after a night in, so off to the vet (I thought end game she has lost a lot of weight and I had one hen with this before, she was PTS  ) Sarah our lovely chicken friendly vet :D she said it was sour crop and let's give her a chance! She has a 5 days course, but I can feel a small bulge in her crop each morning.

Please any help, suggestions or advice gratefully received :D

You say '5 day course'.... course of what?

Impacted crop will be hard and distended, sour crop will be soft and squishy. If she has sour crop, then try to empty the crop, syringe in 2-3ml of neat ACV - repeat twice a day for 3 days, take off solids for 36 hours and give plenty of liquid (diluted poultry tonic is good). That ought to do it without the need for a vet, do bear in mind though that it can be a symptom of a more serious, underlying problem.
