wez
Wooo! After 7 weeks of chicken ownership, the Morehens struck early and we decided to go straight from our Go to a Cube (which we should have done in the first place but it's a long story around rescuing a Pekin, getting so attached we kept her and got her 2 friends) and now the Cube and extension has been delivered! Alright, so we waited all day yesterday for the booked delivery that never arrived (plus hubby took a day off especially to help build and locate it), and today, despite rescheduling for next week on my day off it arrived, all 7 boxes or it, and my lovely neighbour who I've barely spoken to before today kindly took it in and helped me get it back to our place, so tonight we shall be mainly counting components and checking it's all set to go (pardon the pun my lovely Go that served me well for the short term). Hoping we can have it ready for the weekend to get the girls settled in ... I'm rather excited at the prospect (although with all the boxes piled in the hallway at present as that's as far as my aching arms could drag most of it) hubby is going to be in for a surprise when he gets home and I tell him what this evening will entail ... fingers crossed for a weekend of better weather so we can get it up and running. Wish us luck chaps, Milly Mille Fluer, Lilly Lavenderand Tilly Cuckoo have no idea what's coming!
LunaKiw1
Really eggciting! No doubt OH will be thrilled at this prospect of a non-relaxing weekend too. Fingers crossed you have all the necessary bits and bobs and that the weather is kind so you can work in the dry erecting it. Photo please once erected! wez
Yes, he spent an interesting couple of hours with a head torch on Thursday evening, finishing off on Friday and we installed the girls on Saturday. It was like watching TV waiting for them all to ascend the ladder as it got darker and although there were a few clumsy attempts, they all got up, came down this morning and have been in and out a couple of times today. As they're Pekins I think some sort of modification will be necessary just to make it less of a chore for them but will see how it goes over next couple of days. They seems quite at home so will let the wander again in a couple more days then wait for them to decide it's time to start laying! Pics will follow but now I'd best go jetwash our lovely 7 week old Go and get her ready for sale!
mimi5
Hi and congrats on your cube upgrade!!!! My pekins are totally fine in mine but I did have to modify the ladder....they just couldn't manage it well at all There is a pic of it on here somewhere....do a search and see if it comes up. Basically I used green tough garden mesh (homebase)and cable tied it over the ladder, sorted they sort of shuffle up and down I also have a log at the bottom as it's a bit of a drop on to the woodchip Happy chicken keeping......pic sometime maybe
Patricia W
I used pipe insulation with a log at the bottom. They didn't need it after a few weeks but it gives them the idea.
wez
Well ... used some plastic garden mesh on the ladder which has worked a treat and we've ordered a run panel which hubby will 'customise' so it blends in with rest of the run and make the ladder even easier to grip as now ... we've another 2 Pekins to pander to! Have added a Silver Partridge and an almost chocolate Millie to our existing Millie, Lavender and Cuckoo so now we have a flock of 5, we've halved the run with the remaining green plastic garden mesh so they are warily checking each other out from both sides of their fence! Here's hoping for a peaceful night
