Good news on a sunny day!

Recommended Posts

After a horrible time with the torrential rain, and two miserable hens who decided to moult in the middle of the cold and wet, I was sure we were never going to see another egg ever again. They've both been horribly tatty and scruffy and we'd had a fair few softies in spite of grit, ground shell, cod liver oil drops, poultry spice, yoghurt, you name it.

We've all just been out in the garden, with some warmth in the sun if you're out of the wind and...

Tilly has laid an intact egg

To celebrate I gave them a 'chicken biscuit' [one of those nice Corn Thin cracker things] and let them hop into my lap, muddly feet and all, to explore my pockets for crumbs. They didn't notice that I was close to tears

Don't mean to gloat, but if you and/or your dear hens have been miserable, sodden, half-bald and egg-less then take heart, there is hope!

That's such a lovely thing to hear! My Pekins (5 of them) have finally decided to start and we had our first ever egg on Monday and another today from Milly, the eldest. The others are just old enough to start now so roll on Summer and here's to more of the same for you :D:D:D

Just 2 oldun's to go - still getting their feathers! But happily getting eggs from another oldun that moulted and was well sorted before Christmas and the newbies - she did leave it a little late though as she's usually on form by February and was running round the garden with her legs crossed for at least a week beforehand but provided a double yolker so she's forgiven her tardiness!
