Corrugated roofing tips needed!

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I'm hoping to fit a clear corrugated roof to my WIR tomorrow and was hoping that some of you lovely and experienced Omleters would provide some do's and don't's and answer my questions :D

1. Is it easy to drill holes in?

2. Do you recommend using the foam eaves fillers?

3. Any tips to ensure to make it nice and secure?

I've attached a pic of my run if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I didn't actually fit my roof myself but I think it is easy enough to drill into. The guy who did it used washers under the screws.

My only advice would be (especially if you live somewhere windy!) that you can't have enough batons underneath your corrugated plastic sheets. I also added a couple of wooden batons on top of the plastic just to be safe.

You can see my roof in my signature link (looking very clean and new - it's not like that now  ).

Hi there ! That looks great by the way .

We have corregated plastic roofing which has been up now for 4 years and still is working as good as new and I reckon it is a must as the girls are lovely and dry .

It is very easy to drill and fixed to batons . They are overlapped slightly but with no filler .I think that is only as we put it up in a hurry but was not really needed.

One more thing to mention you need it slightly sloping so that the rain runs off .We have a piece of guttering along the edge and the water goes into a water butt.

Good luck and I am sure you won't regret getting chickens..One of my better decisions in life .Send us more pictures when you get them .

Hi all

I'm hoping to fit a clear corrugated roof to my WIR tomorrow and was hoping that some of you lovely and experienced Omleters would provide some do's and don't's and answer my questions :D

1. Is it easy to drill holes in? yes but but don't use to big of a bit a 4mm or 4.5mm tops and let the drill do the work as the sheets do have a habit of cracking when drilled in cold weather

2. Do you recommend using the foam eaves fillers? yes for how little they cost they help to support the sheets when tightening the fixing

3. Any tips to ensure to make it nice and secure? use the screws not nail if you've not fitted a corrugated roof before fix through the ridge not the valley at least every other ridge it's about 3-4 fixings to each sheet at top middle and bottom depending on the width of the sheet .personally I'd have put an extra joist in across the length of the roof i.e. left to right as I prefer to support clear corrugated roof sheets at no more than 600mm centres work from the fence side(left in the photo) it'll make fitting the last sheet easier the hard part is getting the first sheet square to the roof

I've attached a pic of my run if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Thanks everyone, knew you'd be a great help! Boyfriend and Dad are helping me today. BF isn't the best at DIY, I am much better however lost 4 of my fingers on my left hand 6 months ago so find fiddly things like screwing screws more difficult than I did before.

Jackian, I already have my girls though the pic of the run was taken when it was first built back in June 2013. Wish I had a roof put on from the beginning! Here are my girls, but imagine lots more mud!!

Yeh I know bit of a "Ooops, word censored!" isn't it. I was Leading my two horses through the gateway into their paddock and one spooked at the electric fence. He knocked me over then galloped over me severing 4 of my fingers in the process. Nothing the surgeons could do as they were so mashed (once they had found them, it's amazing how far fingers can travel when they are detached from your person!) I've lost them from the middle knuckle up so still have some length left and there's people was far worse injuries than me and they cope so I have no excuse!

Ain't "Ooops, word censored!"ody here - There's only so much crying you can do. Crying won't grow my fingers back so you just have to get on with it don't you. Don't get me wrong, I get upset every now and again but less and less as time goes on. What can you do??
