dipsychick
Oh yes we managed to break the broody spell that Betty ( evil Edna ! ) was under in two days last week, but low and behold freckles has been caught in the nest box most of today and yesterday . This morning I watched her rolling eggs from the other end of the nest box and then sitting on them , luckily she has got friendlier , she's a real bossy Bella and we thought she would turn into a real henzilla . I moved the two eggs from under her to the other side to try and encourage the que of squawking egg layers balancing on the cube ladder to settle down there as freckles was in the prime location ! And had no intention of moving . Before they had poked a head round the divide she had rolled them back again so I gave up and turfed her out . We decided the broody buster would need to come out again , I had been looking for a small dog crate on eBay but remembered we had some bits of a puppy pen . We dug them out and I managed to make a cage attached to a side of the wir , in she went complaining very loudly , after a while she quietened down and has never been so well behaved so fingers crossed again this works . Here is broody buster mark 2 Apologies if I'm doing photos wrong can't find anywhere to select sizes
Luvachicken
That's a fab broody cage I thought my usual suspect was broody but bless her, she was just taking her time laying her egg
dipsychick
I'm not quite sure how but when we returned from taking the mindees out this morning for a couple of hours we found freckles ( Houdini ) running round the garden and everyone else in the run still , she was in the broody buster. I think it was sheer determination , I watched her after she was re caged , she just jumped and flapped at the top of the cage so hard the top was lifting up . A few pegs did the trick for now but may have to get some bulldog clips
Chickabee
oh dear, at least she didn't hide and make a nest somewhere
dipsychick
Well she is proving very determined , this morning she was merrily hopping about the garden with the others , we kept an eye out and sure enough after lunch she was discovered shoving everyone else out of the nest box So in the broody buster she went until bed time. Now I thought we were sorted for bed time and had been so clever blocking the hole to the nest box with a small trug but when I went to fish out jack and check they were all in bed guess who was back in the nest box Trug still firmly in place she must have gone over the top such a madam . So tomorrow I'm going to fill the nest box at bed time with footballs or flower pots !!
mimi5
To break her broodiness you need to leave her in the anti broody cage for 3 days and nights straight!! That should do it.....but no free ranging or sneaking to the nest box
