daphne_and_polly
we got our lovely new red eglu about 3 months ago now. We bought 2 chickens - Daphne, a speckeldy, and Polly, a light Sussex, at the same time. Daphne duly started laying us eggs about 6 weeks later, but no sign of anything from Polly. She's still noticeably getting bigger, and has recently moulted. Is she just a late starter (or maybe she was slightly younger than we were led to believe when we got her), is there any way we can encourage her, or are there chickens out there who just don't lay? Thanks for any advice!
Lovemychooks
Hmmm, not sure what to suggest on this one, sorry I can't be of any help. Hopefully someone will be along soon
Ladylucan
when i first got mine if i remember correctly it was over 10 weeks before i got anything from either of them xx
chelsea
ours were about 20-23 weeks when they 1st started to lay. A sure sign of coming into lay is a crouching action made by the hen when you go to stroke them, also they eat loads more when they start laying. arowland17
I'm very new to this but I think the breeder we got our 2 from said that ours would lay at around 25 weeks as they were first crosses so similar to pure breeds, and that they wont moult until next winter as they're so young... not sure if misheard that or not though so this probably isn't much help! Ours have just started laying, their combs got bigger and redder (one of them went from pink to red almost overnight) and started crouching when we went to stroke them about a week before they laid their 1st egg
Egluntyne
Their diet can affect their laying...what are you feeding them on. Layers pellets and a few treats (not until late afternoon) should help them on their way.
daphne_and_polly
Polly is, according to the age the breeder said she was when we bought her, over 30 weeks old now. I feed them layers pellets and the odd treat. She looks very healthy, her comb is bright red (has been for a good few weeks) and she frequently settles herself down on the ground in a broody sort of way. But still no eggs....
