Willow
My YS and I visited a surgeon about an abscess removal, she asked him general questions about his health but also asked about his acne and how widespread it was. The abscess is completely unrelated to his acne and she had examined it and could see there was no acne in that area, nor would there be even with widespread acne. I'm bemused about the ques about acne I'm sure there was a good reason as she has a very good reputation as a surgeon, it's just bugging me that I can't fathom what that reason would be. Any health professionals on here able to shed any light ?
chickencam
It could just have been professional curiosity. When my YD went to the specialist dermatological doctor in our practice to have a wart removed from the top of her ear, he asked her about her acne and said I've got a cream for that, then about her dry skin on her hand again saying I've got a cream for that. It made us laugh because we decided that he was a proper skin condition nerd. I've got a cream for that has become a bit of an in joke here. On a serious note he gave her some Duac gel for her acne and it has helped a lot. She has had bad skin since she was 10 poor kid, she is 15 now and it has settled on her face but not on her chest and back, but the gel helps there too when she remembers to use it. Grandmashazzie
Prob just professional interest, enquiring about the patient as a whole not just thinking about abscess.Or she may be aware of some treatment and was trying to gauge how much a prob it was for him. Willow
A simple explanation as I suspected Thank-you, I assumed she would be just asking ques that related to her speciality. He did say the acne didn't bother him much so it may well have been that she'd have made a treatment suggestion if he hadn't. TBH his acne would be mostly undercontrol if he could be bothered to use a wash-off cleanser or even skin wipes every night as it improves dramatically if I nag for a few weeks but when I ease off so does he. He'd still have breakouts though and it's good he isn't self conscious. I think having an older brother he knows the main cure is time and he should age out of it soon. Angie
Some medications used for abscesses can make acne worse and some drugs for acne will conflict with other treatments, and acne is bacterial too so can be an infection risk if near surgical sites. A routine question as it happens.
Willow
Nowhere near site so no infection risk. But she has given us an emergency antibiotic prescription. Could antibiotics make acne worse ?

No. If anything antibiotics could help clear it up.
quickcluck
It can also give a idea how the wound will heal, with regarding scarring!
Alis girls
My son was on tetracyclines for acne for a while. If they need different antibiotics for an abscess may need to check what meds they are already taking. Doctors and Nurses are nosy I am afraid - if someone comes in with a cut I have to know how, why etc and if they are not forthcoming makes me more determined - esp if its summat dodgey going on- ooh that makes me more inquisitive. I suspect policemen/women are the same obviously. So morale is if you have summat you want to hide dont come and see me
Willow
Help clearing up the acne would be good, although the prescription is for if the abscess flares up before she gets to remove it so we may not fill that prescription. It can also give a idea how the wound will heal, with regarding scarring! Good point, that never occurred to me. At present he doesn't have any scarring which is lucky Thank-you all, I knew you would be able to clear up my mystery.
