That product is good; spray it onto a soft toothbrush and then brush it onto the legs GENTLY in an upward motion so as to get it under the scales.

 

The preventative is a spot-on product much as you use on dogs and cats for fleas; you will have to see a chicken-savvy vet for a prescription as it's not licensed for use on poultry in the UK. There's some information here

I gave up on Ommlet Forum because I never found any responses. Have been reading this thread today, scaly leg mite. I have two chucks, the Peking Bantam and an egg she hatched (she is permanently broody). Anyway, I treated her for scaly mite ages ago and thought all was clear. She hatched the egg a year ago and, until recently, I had two very healthy and happy chucks. I want to get in more birds, so I fumigated the house and changed the litter in the pen. I then spotted that the big chuck has leg mites. I have been treating them both with a spray, which appears to have no effect. I am now brushing on liquid parafin regularly. I am not sure if there is some improvement or not. The little bantam certainly looks better, and the bigger one does appear to be loosing the scales. I think she may be picking them off. I read in an old fashioned, chicken keeping book, that rubbing their feet in vaseline and bandaging them does the trick. Has anyone else come across this? Do you think it would work? Would the chickens pick off the bandaging? Would one do it at night and perhaps put them in a box overnight? I have a vision of the chucks limping around the pen with bandages trailing behind them.

I think brushing the feet with the parafin does hurt, as the bigger chuck does object a little, but that could be because her feet are tender from losing the scales. What do you think?

I'm not sure about the bandages route

I think you'd have to be up very early to remove them so they didn't get caught on anything.

What spray were you using before that didn't work ?

Are you trying to get rid of the scaly leg mite before you get new ones ?

I wouldn't bother with bandages, never heard of it before.

 

It's almost impossible to tell if the mites have gone as the scales will remain raised looking , but if you look closely, the crusting under them will go. It is important not to remove the scales as that can damage the growth plate, and will allow infection in to the area.

I found the best stuff was as DM says - the spot on treatment. I use Harker mectin*not licensed for use on poultry in UK - if it's OK for pigeons it's OK for my girls. It has the added benefit of keeping Northern mite away and other nasties. I still have a cupboard full of Nettex stuff - and a huge pot of Vaseline from a constant fight with scaly leg on one of my old orpies though!!!

Just a little update on my girls legs - they all seem fine.

I think the problem with Gemma, who was my original concern, is that she is so, so feathery on her feet and legs.

I sprayed them again yesterday and looked at Gemma's legs very carefully and can see new feathers under the scales.

I will keep on spraying them and when the nettex runs out I will get them some of the spot on stuff and use that instead.

 

Just wondering where exactly you put the spot on stuff on

Do you put it on the back of their necks like Frontline on a dog or do you put it near their legs ?

And Valkyrie, do you think they sell the Harker mectin at Rokers ? Perhaps I'll ring them.

I get mine online from Viovet - pretty good price at the moment. I haven't seen it at Rokers. Incidentally I go to the Alton/Selbourne farm shop if I need Nutridrops and get 2 or 3 at a time as "Ooops, word censored!"ody else sells it round here. And yep like DM says, on the base of the neck. Certainly keeps the Northern mite at bay too.

Oooh and I had a reminder sent to me from Viovet (I did request it), for some more drops. £7.33 a bottle. I still have some left from before so I won't need it yet, but it's a good idea for reminding me that they need another dosing!

That doesn't sound too bad if that's the case.

I will have a look tomorrow - have been a bit spend happy on things the last couple of weeks and need some more wages to come my way before I buy anything else.

Yes, per small bottle but it does go round a long way. Sorry I don't bother to tick the notification box because it seems to hiccup and I don't get notified even when I do (just noticed I have ticked the box on this thread ) and I have a habit of forgetting what I've been chatting on!
