Chicken with diarrhoea

Recommended Posts

My 3.25 year old ranger hybrid has had diarrhoea and mucky bottom for the last week. She feels very light in weight I have put her on nutri drops, today is day 4. They have picked her up a bit, comb better and today she has been wandering round the wir okish but not with her normal energy levels. Let the girls out for free ranging and she has laid down, head very droopy and stayed there. I have offered her water and she hasn't taken it. She is making squeaking noises too...breathing probs? She is now separate from the other girls (the bossy ice queen was already prodding her with her beak). Anything else I can do if she makes it much longer? Last laid an egg a week or so ago. Last wormed with flubenvet third week in February.

That's old for a hybrid Clucker1. I would guess at sour crop, but that doesn't explain the apparent respiratory infection noises. You are right to separate, they will kill her given the chance and eat her as well. I don't know what to advise, just make sure she drinks before taking her to the vet.

Thanks Beantree, yes Crumble has done well. She has been such a sweet chicken. It isn't sourcrop, that is all fine. Just been out to check on her and I will be surprised if she is still here in the morning, lying very quietly not drinking. I am :( but they don't last forever :( TBH I haven't given her a dose of nutridrops this pm, I don't want to prolong it for her....she has gone downhill quickly despite being on them anyway if that make sense.)

We lost our oldest hen recently to a heart condition which caused her lungs to fill with fluid. Can't remember the technical term now, but it is a human condition as well. She struggled on for some time, surviving a relocation, but at 7 and a half, without any previous illness, she had a great life.

Hey Clucker1 how's Crumble, hope she passed peacefully.Thats the worst time when you think one won't last the night ,and you go to the coop to check.I know I always hoped they had gone as there is little you can do except perhaps the vet to be PTS .Though I have just let mine fade away as I'm sure the stress of going to the vets would be worse.

Thank you Beantree and Grandmashazzie....well these chickens do surprise you....Crumble was still alive this morning at 0730, kept checking her and she faded away a couple of hours later, bless her. Think it might have been to do with her kidneys as she was drinking a lot of water. She was such a sweet chicken. RIP Crumble xx
