Different crop sizes ?

Recommended Posts

This afternoon I gave the girls a cuddle each.

I noticed that Lucie's crop was quite big, Suzie's was middle sized, Gemma is in the broody cage so I didn't feel hers, but I couldn't find Queenie's crop :?

Do different chickens have different sized crops ?

Queenie has been eating and drinking fine and doesn't show any signs of illness - as far as I can tell - BUT she hasn't laid any eggs yet this year. She is 2 and a little bit and feels nice and heavy - not underweight I mean.

Should I be worried that Lucie's crop has something wrong with it ( she also seems fine ) because it is so big, or should I be worried about Queenie because I couldn't find hers ? :?

Oh luvachicken....always something to worry about...

My girls crops are always different, I have posted about Barbara's crop a few times as she occasionally has a slightly bigger crop than the others in the morning. Sometimes they look so huge I wonder how they can carry them about but other times, like last night they all seemed pretty small.

Chooks....always something to worry about :wall: I am, at the moment worrying about Barbara and her consistent laying of softies/shell less egg's. I hope it's because she is a 2 1/2 year old ex commercial hybrid rather that any internal/absorption problem...and she always lays them at night

gavclojak you are right.

If it's not one thing it's another

I'm going to check them later on. After feasting on an apple there should be something to feel.

Queenie also has dirty knickers today so I will check that out too.

The fact that Queenie has dirty knickers could be a sign that something is amiss (equally it might not, but it's definitely worth giving her a once over and keeping an eye on her). However if she is not laying, she won't be eating as much as the others and therefore her crop may well be emptier. Lucie may well just be a greedy guts! Check her first thing in the morning to see if her crop is empty and if it is, there should be nothing to worry about. If it's not empty it could be impacted. I'd certainly be more inclined to keep an eye on an empty crop than a large crop.

Yes Lavenders Blue, I agree that dirty knickers are often a possible sign of not being well. I have learnt this from some of my other girls.

Anyway, I gave her a good look over and dried her feathers on her bottom - I think it was more of a wet, dirty poo and that's why it stood out - and gave her a portion of nutridrops. She looked much better with a dry bottom. I did put a touch of Vaseline on her just below her vent as there was a little smear of dry poo there and thought that would soften it. She does seem fine.

I gave all of the pekins crops a feel and they are all actually quite small. I think like some of you have said, that Lucie is a greedy guts - but then she is different to them.

I got some more nutridrops as the ones I have already are Feb '14, do you think it's ok to still use the 2014 one ?
